#AIR-CLINIC PUBLIC FORUM 4: What Do You Think About The Smell In Some Hospitals? Is It Really Hospitable?!

in #air-clinic7 years ago

Hello Air-Clinicians & Friends,

This is the fourth week of our weekly public forum discussions and it keeps getting better and more interesting.

The last discussions we had have no doubt revealed more a lot about the healthcare/hospital settings to our audience.

Many can see reasons why things are done the way they are and it gladdens us that #AIR-CLINIC, the first ever healthcare system built on the Steem blockchain is pioneering this initiative.

Last week's topic was an eye opener. We talked about whether or not patients consult should be gender-based, considering some instances where patients might be shy if the healthcare worker/professional is of the opposite sex.

Those who contributed were @uc-phoenix, @ehan, @seunnla, @emmakwisequote, @alexokolosi, @sayee, @idowu-kunlere, @princefm, @uvokz etc

We appreciate every single one of you for taking your time to drop comments either to debunk sucha a notion or to support it. We also thank you for sharing your experiences.

So, this week, let's discuss another topic. What Do You Think About The Smell In Some Hospitals? Is It Really Hospitable?

Let's have you talk about this. Feel free to drop helpful suggestions and anything you feel we should know in this regard.

@airclinic, the odor in hospitals is a very "unique" one. It smells of a mixture of life and death, blood, disinfectants and sometimes new born babies. For me, it makes me dizzy, handling the odor is not the problem, my problem is "I always feel like that the odor Is still on me like a perfume even after leaving the hospital"....the odor in some hospitals is not welcoming or friendly , I wish something can be done about it

Yeah you are very right @onyechi.
Well-coordinated hospitals do know how to manage the smell.
A clean, disinfected atmosphere is the best place to handle health.

Personally, I think the smell in some hospitals are fowl. But then if you consider that different people with different problems come here for treatment, it's hard to imagine how it doesn't smell. Having said that I must add that new measures should an be put in place to solve the problem. Better hygiene should be obServed

I personally don't like the smell and presence in a hospital. I don't like the sight of blood and smell too, So to me I don't like the smell AT ALL @air-clinic

Hey @uvokz,
Lolx. So you are afraid of blood?

Lolz. Yea, you got the word "afraid". I wanted to be a doctor but that factor restricted me. I liked to be a Doctor real bad but I couldnt help how I feel whenever I see blood.

The smell of most Nigerian hospitals is really as ironic as it hits your nostrils. One would expect that being a hospital where the sick comes to get healed, it should smell in such a way as to bring or speed up the healing process. But alas! Most Nigerian hospitals are far from that. There would be little or no surprise if the smell makes you even more ill than you came.
In conclusion, the smell of most hospitals is not hospitable and efforts should be made to address this.

Hey @uc-phoenix,
Very true points you have stated. This phenomenon is not limited to Nigeria however, its global.

I've noticed that its mostly public hospitals that smell. I talk based on my experience in Nigerian hospitals. The reason may be due to poor maintenance of the public hospitals and the laissez faire attitude of the cleaning staff.

Poor maintenance might be part of it, but a major part of it is the crowd flow.

Hey @ikechi,
Exactly. The prevalence is higher in public hospitals due to poor management, high patient load etcz.

I think it will be far fetched to expect an hospital not to have any smell at all, even if it is just the smell of methylated spirit . Although the smell should be kept minimal, and the use of good fragrance encouraged.

Hey @bibby,
Lolx. You are right though the smell of methylated spirit is not as repulsive as the pungent odour that exudes attimes.

Hospitals all have their own unique smell. I have worked in one for the last 26 years and it still hits me even when I work everyday. Where I work it is clean but the hospital lobby is home for many of our aged in the community so it has the smell of cleaner, topped by the smell of aging. It is not very welcoming at all. I think hospitals should strive to keep odours to a minimum as many patients are sensitive to them. Scents should also be discouraged as they can contribute to the problem for many with lung issues.

Thank you for you @air-clinic for your untiring effort to make our world better.

The odours in hospitals are not hospitable at all.. Lol
In fact, i don't enjoy visiting sick people in the hospital due to this terrible odour. If i visit you, then you must be extra important to me.
Our family doctor usually be the one to come and treat us in the house.

I hate visiting hospitals in the first place. The odour in hospitals is not palatable at all. Each time i get home after visitng the hospital, i treat my self as if am coming from a barbers shop. I drop the clothes for washing and head straight to the bathroom.

Speaking as a girl who has only visited Nigerian Hospitals,
Public Hospitals Yuck!! 😖
Private Hospitals 👍

My Mum works in a public hospital and so as a child, I visited the place severally.
Her office in the department (pathology) didn't have a very terrible smell but the wards were terrible. Even the walkways beside the wards. I used to get so nauseated.
I hated the hospital then because the smell of hospitals sicken me.

Until I visited a private hospital. ☺.
The smell of sweet fragrance was always so strong, everywhere.
It smelled like a perfumed shop.

Public hospitals are so under-maintained right now talk more of setting out budget for proper fragrance.
If they would just go for the cheap locally made fragrances, it would a great deal.
