Taking a Saturday Stroll in Judy Woods with me @c0ff33a ☕️steemCreated with Sketch.

Now that is a photo to start a post with, how awesome is that carving in the dead tree? Today a took a walk with my boy around a look woods known as Judy Woods, protected woodland that over 40 hectares is also one of the largest in our local Bradford district.

We took a stroll along a bridleway to reach the woods, parking some distance away from the actual woodland. The bridleway gave some lovely views over the fields.

IMG_7300.jpg

Finally we reached the entrance to the woodland, there are actually around four main entrances - this is a relative minor one.

IMG_7304.jpg

This tree has suffered damage from recent strong winds, look how it has split right down the trunk.

IMG_7306.jpg

IMG_7307.jpg

This tree we found very interesting, the roots looking like the tentacles of an octopus.

IMG_7308.jpg

There are quite a few steep sections to clamber up and down, and some areas have a large proportion of slate deposits - which make it even more difficult.

IMG_7309.jpg

Amongst thicker areas of woodland, there are also more open areas to explore.

IMG_7311.jpg

This dead trunk appears to have had all it's bark stripped off.

IMG_7312.jpg

Some areas get much more denser with trees, but there is always a path to follow through.

IMG_7313.jpg

Look at the size of this fallen trunk. At this point we cross the bridleway again to join the larger body of woodland.

IMG_7315.jpg

Another large dead trunk, again with the bark stripped away.

IMG_7316.jpg

And this is like a crazy straw themed tree - very crooked!

IMG_7317.jpg

Now we find the small stream that runs through the woods.

IMG_7321.jpg

It is not so deep, but quite fast flowing.

IMG_7324.jpg

At this point we are quite deep into the woods, and have travelled a good distance from where I parked.

IMG_7325.jpg

There are some steep climbs to get back up out of the stream valley.

IMG_7326.jpg

Another large clearing, this would make a good area to do woodland activities.

IMG_7327.jpg

The paths are clear to see, they are obviously regularly used. Although we do not see to many people today, just a few dog walkers.

IMG_7328.jpg

A bridge crossed this section, it most likely fills with water when the weather is very wet.

IMG_7329.jpg

This is a very curious looking tree, quite spooky really.

IMG_7330.jpg

We found a rope swing, there were many on the route but most were very high up - this was at least accessible.

IMG_7335.jpg

There were many of these simple bridges across very small streams that must run to the main one we saw earlier.

IMG_7336.jpg

Can you spot the squirrel? There were many running around the leaves, often you did not see them but could hear the rustling.

IMG_7343.jpg

Someone has been doing productive branch collecting.

IMG_7348.jpg

This fallen log is entirely covered by moss, only a few areas of the forest seemed to have the correct conditions for moss to grow in this way.

IMG_7350.jpg

Back on the bridleway, the dry stone walls collected a fair amount of moss as well. And so my Saturday walk comes to an end, it was starting to get dark - and we didn't fancy being in these woods when it did!

IMG_7353.jpg

These lovely daffodils were at the side of the bridleway, it has been so mild and warm this week you could imagine it is May already - it’s going to be a shock if the cold returns.

Howdy sir c0ff33a! Thanks for taking us on the walk with you, it was quite a long one wasn't it? The variety of sites and trees is amazing and the countryside there is beautiful! Is this a weekly hike? I bet it's gorgeous in the summer.

Thank you very much, it’s a lovely forest with a wide range of walks through it. My boy has been before, it was the first time I have been. I will go back with him though - good exercise and very interesting too.

howdy today sir c0ff33a! And that hike in the summer is going to be fabulous I have a feeling, very beautiful.
How's the coffee shop business?

Does kinda look like an octopus, must have been an Ursula Tree🤣

Thank you very much, there were quite a few very unusual trees - I need to go back and get even more photos!

awesome day to explore lots of exciting shots : )

Thank you very much

Quite a very eerie woodland for me @c0ff33a but maybe soon those trees would bear green leaves and once again would show their glory and beauty.

Thank you very much, yes it will look much better in summer with green trees. An amazing place still, and I was fascinated with the carved tree.

That looks like a pretty spooky forest you were walking through! I am looking forward to the warm and green months. How about you @c0ff33a? :)

Thank you very much, I was getting a little worried when it started to get dark and we were still quite deep into it! I can’t wait for the warm weather to get outside more.

The one where you ask if we can spot the squirrel is sort of a spooky tree with those branches sticking out of the ground.

Your son is handsome. A cutie is what we say here. lol

That 1st tree is really a work of art. :)

Thank you very much, there were quite a few spooky trees in the forest. I was impressed with the tree carving as well, it made a nice entry to this area of the forest.

Walk among the dead trees. Nice place to walk and love those carving bit scary but appreciable 👍

Thank you very much, it really is an expansive forest you could easily spend a whole day wandering through it.

That is a fantastic carving on that tree in the top shot! Wow, love it! Looks like a lovely spot of woods for a walk, too! I bet it is spectacular there in autumn! 😊

Thank you very much, it’s a very popular area - especially in summer for children to play in. The carving is really good, and a fun way to welcome you into the forest.

Wow the woods around you are pretty! Is there like any wildlife that live there? Some of the trees had very interesting branches 🤔. I read somewhere that if you ever come across branches that are all bent, they were mostly done by old travellers that used that path often, and thats how they knew where to go incase they got lost.

Thank you very much, mostly squirrels and a few birds in the forest that is all. The fields around the forest have horses in. I have heard about the crooked trees too, there were plenty of markings on the tree trunk - but they are mostly along the lines of Bert luvs Maisie lol

That carving is incredible. Any idea who did it or how old it is?

Posted using Partiko Android

Thank you very much, I was impressed with the carving as well. I don’t think it is too old though, from the look of the tree. There are a few carved trees in my boys school playground- so I think someone local might specialise at it.
