Animated Paintover

in #art8 years ago (edited)

An artist made this digital painting, then asked me for a paintover (in a public forum many years ago).
I did this in Photoshop, he said it helped. Let me know if you want one too, I will do my best to try to give some useful feedback. :)

In this one you can see there's not a big problem with anatomy, or construction. Even the lighting isn't completely wrong, but I find the high contrast of the original is adversely affecting the composition. Going from almost white to almost black in so many smaller areas all around the painting introduces way too many points of interest to draw our attention, or "eye-magnets". It creates noise and confusion and dilutes or even hides the message, the visual communication.

So I tried to unify and flatten some areas, getting rid of all those white lines in the fire. I also tried to emphasize the water as a light source, which is something I always like to do - if a light source or potential light source is visible inside the art, I try to use it as such, casting light on the main subject. Sometimes I even try to make it the only light source. (You can tell it was intended as a light source in the original too.) I did miss out on the light coming from her head set though, sorry about that.
