Breakfast at Pho-Chai Market in Nongkhai, หาอาหารเช้าที่ตลาดโพธิ์ชัยที่หนองคาย

The best place to have breakfast in Nongkhai is at Pho-Chai market which is the main morning market which is also close to the main bus terminal. One can take a local Tuk-Tuk to Pho-Chai market either from the train station or from the hotel, the ride will range from fifty to hundred baht depending how far your hotel is from the market.

People in this market are very friendly and willing to engage in conversation with visitors. At the front of the market is the section for flowers and food stalls. Many locals will be having their breakfast in this part. There are about twenty food stalls for cooked breakfast at very cheap prices. Last years I took two visitors to have their breakfast, they couldn’t choose which breakfast to order first. There is quite a selection of Vietnamese food stalls as well. This is because the first generation Vietnamese refugees came to settle in Nongkhai more than fifty years ago. Selling food has become their livelihood. There are also several traditional coffee shops and a few Thai sweets including snack stalls. After breakfast, we bought lots of take-away snacks and sweets for our afternoon picnic at other old temples.

One the right side of the market, there are shops selling very cheap clothes, bags, shoes and fashionable goods. The backend of the market is for fresh food, meat and vegetable sections. The local bus terminal is only five minutes’ walk away from the market. This is very convenient for buying ordinary or VIP bus tickets to travel to Bangkok, Udon, Pattaya or to Laos. There are also modern coffee shops around the bus station.

ที่หนองคายตอนเช้าควรไปหาอาหารเช้ากินที่ตลาดโพธิ์ชัย ซึ่งเป็นตลาดเช้าที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในหนองคาย ค่าเดินทางโดยตุ๊กตุ๊กไปตลาดก็ไม่แพงประมาณ ห้าสิบบาทไม่เกินร้อยบาทขึ้นอยู่กับระยะทางจากโรงแรม ด้านหน้าของตลาดเป็นร้านขายดอกไม้ เดินเข้าไปในตลาดจะเห็นร้านขายอาหารเช้าประมาณเกือบยี่สิบเจ้า มีอาหารเช้าให้เลือกมากมายรวมทั้งอาหารเวียตนามด้วย เพราะคนจีนเชื้อสายเวียตนามได้อพยพมาปักหลักที่นี่มากกว่าห้าสิบปีแล้ว อาชีพการทำอาหารขายจึงกลายเป็นทางหาเงินและสร้างฐานะของเขา ในตลาดมีร้านกาแฟโบราณหลายร้าน ร้านขายขนมไทยและของกินเล่นอีกด้วย กว่าจะออกจากตลาดได้ก็ต้องหอบอาหารและขนมติดมือไปปิกนิกต่อที่วัดอื่นๆได้ทั้งวัน

ด้านขวาของตลาดเป็นโซนขายเสื้อผ้า กระเป๋า รองเท้าและของแฟชั่นต่างๆในราคาย่อมเยาว์ ส่วนท้ายตลาดเป็นโซนอาหารสด โซนผักผลไม้ และอาหารสดมากมาย ห่างจากตลาดเพียงห้านาทีคือสถานีขนส่ง เป็นท่าจอดรถเมล์ทั้งแบบธรรมดาและรถบัสหรูติดแอร์ ที่สถานีนี้สามารถเดินทางไปกรุงเทพฯ อุดร หรือพัทยา และไปลาวได้ รอบๆสถานีมีร้านกาแฟหรูหลายร้าน และร้านอาหารตามสั่งไว้บริการผู้โดยสาร การเดินทางจากหนองคายโดยรถโดยสารไปจังหวัดต่างๆมีเส้นทางให้เลือกมากจนน่าแปลกใจ
