Singing to Elephant in Chiengmai, ร้องเพลงกล่อมช้างที่เชียงใหม่
Elephants are very intelligent and sensitive animals. They played a very important role in Thai history and society. Since the industrial revolution and the microelectronic revolution, Thai agricultural society has been transformed into industrialised and service industries. Elephants, horses and buffalos have been reduced in numbers and importance.
Elephants seem to have been extremely badly treated as they have been used to do logging in the forest and later, after deforestation, elephants have been reduced to beggars by their owners and their tasks taken for sale. Fortunately, many concerned Thais have been trying to help the plight of remaining elephants in Thailand. The elephant foundation in the old capital city, Ayudhya, looks after old elephants and tries to preserve the old knowledge and Thai tradition of elephant keeping and training. There are also various foundations to help old and injured elephants.
Elephants are sacred animals for the warriors in the old days as they had to fight on elephants' backs. Elephants have always been an important part of Thai life in the past. They deserve to be treated with respect and gratitude instead of making them work like slaves in the forest or used as beggars along the streets.
ช้างเป็นสัตว์ที่มีความฉลาดและเป็นสัตว์ที่มีความสำคัญกับประวัติศาสตร์ไทยตั้งแต่ในอดีต ช้างศึกช่วยออกรบต่อสู้ปกป้องเอกราชของประเทศ ในเวลาสงบช้างช่วยแผ้วถางต้นไม้ และชักลากซุง ทำให้เกิดความอยู่ดีกินดีของคนในชาติ. เมื่อมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงจากสังคมเกษตรกรรมมาเป็นสังคมอุตสาหกรรม จนกระทั่งกลายเป็นยุคสังคมสารสนเทศและการบริการ ทำให้ทั้งช้าง ม้า และควายหมดความสำคัญ และมีจำนวนน้อยลงมาก แต่โชคดีที่มีคนไทยให้ความสำคัญกับชะตาชีวิตของช้างที่เหลือเพียงไม่กี่เชือก
ช้างต้องโดนกระทำถูกใช้แรงงานเยี่ยงทาสในป่า. บ้างก็ถูกฆ่าเพื่อเอางา และลูกช้างไปขาย บ้างถูกใช้เป็นขอทานเดินตามถนนร้อนๆทั้งวัน ช้างเคยช่วยบ้านเมืองให้คงอยู่ได้ ช่วยให้สังคมเกษัตรแบบโบราณมีความเจริญ ช้างควรจะได้รับการดูแลและความเคารพจากคนรุ่นต่อๆไป ช้างเคยเป็นสัญลักษณ์บนธงชาติไทยในอดีต คนโบราณมีความเข้าใจเรื่องช้างดีมาก และให้ความเคารพดูแลช้างโดยรู้ถึงบุญคุณของช้าง ถ้าคนไทยไม่สำนึกถึงคุณค่าของช้าง ตลอดจนสัตว์ต่างๆที่เคยอยู่คู่สังคมไทยสมัยก่อนแล้ว. สังคมอาจจะเปลี่ยนไปจนกระทั่งมนุษษ์ก็อาจจะไม่มีความหมาย และถูกทดแทนด้วยหุ่นยนต์ในอนาคต

Elephants are very beautiful creatures. Unfortunately they are killed in Africa for their ivory.
