"You Never Take A Bad Picture!!"

"It's impossible to get a bad picture of you!"
"All your pictures are so good!"

Not true.

I only SHOW you the good ones, or at leats decent ones, but I take, and model in, a lot of really really bad pictures. I have had multiple requests to show the bad pictures, which I was first hesitant to do. Then I realised it could be helpful and interesting to see that a shoot that gives a few great results I share, comes with a lot of bad pictures in the process. My enormous ego needs this too, it's been getting a bit too blown up.

I think one of THE MOST IMPORTANT things about photography is evaluating your own work constantly and finding the flaws, and working out how to fix them. Photography in a sense is just problem solving, and I love a good puzzle.

You don't just one day learn to take pictures and then only take good ones from then on out. You will forever be taking bad ones too, but a great photographers can recognise the shots that work well and only showcase those.

You will need to evaluate your images during, after and between shoots. It's also important to understand what is possible for you to achieve with your subject, surroundings, the light that is available and the gear you have, time is also a variable. For example if you have a 35mm lens with a max aperture of f4, there is no way you can completely blow out the background of the portrait. You will, with time and practise, learn to recognise potential and know when you are getting close to something that will work out. Sometimes you hit it on one go, sometimes you use hours tweaking different things to get to a point where you can finally start to really shoot good pictures.

Always search for inspiration and learn techniques from amazing photographers, but it's still more important to work with your own skillset, tools and vision to create the best possible art you can.

I look at my own pictures way more than I look at other people's. Let that be a lesson on life in general; you focus on what you do, not what other people do.

I usually try not to take bad pictures (obviously) but when I do, which is every time, I will discard the most obviously bad ones in camera and they never even make it to the computer. But I do have loads of bad pictures saved up and taking the data space. Lucky for you, since you asked for them. Here is a random collection of bad pictures, unretouched (other than bw added).

I could go on because I have a lot of material, but you get the point. Let me know what you think of this post and if you found it interesting, I can do another set of roasting my own photos.

Sort:

I don't think all of these photos are that bad or bad at all. Actually I think that some of them are good. They just tell a different story than what you were aiming for when you were shooting.

My favourite photos are 2,3,4 and 5. Photos 4 and 5 actually look like someone else has taken the photos and you are caught off guard or just relaxing after shooting. It's all about what you want to tell with the photo and if the photos isn't what you meant it to be, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad photo.

But I do understand if you for instance don't like your expression. That is hard to disregard if you think that you look tired or deranged or, I don't know, something that you don't want to look like. But we might not see that. If the expression isn't obvious. And if it is, it just tells a different story than the perfect picture you were aiming for.

More of these, please! :)

Maybe they would work to illustrate a story of a crack addict hooker, I’ll give you that. I like to think my look is balancing on that fine line between heroin chic and an arrest photo, it’s a split second difference.

:D It's a good thing that we can agree on this one.

Perfect pictures are perfect and fine and beautiful and interesting and pleasing on the eye and all that. And they also may tell a story. If a photographer is looking for a glam or a pin up photo then that's what it is. And should be. But to take a photo that instantly gives the viewer also a story about what is going on, what has happened or who the character (in this case) is in this photo, is pure magic. And although the photo might not be perfectly framed or there's too much stuff, it's more realistic and tells a story. And I love stories that just pop in to my head because of an interesting photo. Just like people watching in the streets.

I think your taste for entertainment might be a little twisted, but who am I to judge!

I do understand that you (or anyone else for that matter) will view my images way differently than I do myself. It’s my ego that clouds the reality. If I take pictures of other people, I’m way more leniant and I don’t want to take just a ”pretty” picture, but an interesting one.

I think it was Annie Leibovitz who said she doesn’t agree with the notion that the subject of the photo should be made comfortable in front of the camera, and I agree. Just not when I’m the subject 😅

Yeah, never would want those photos to be published where I think my face looks like crap. So yes, I do understand you.

Not gonna lie. Still look pretty good to me :D

Do you need glasses perhaps!?

"My face ruining pictures since forever."

As if.

Good post Eve, good to see you're fallible like the rest of us. 😁

No superwoman here but I can spin bad pictures into coins, how’s that for a skill!?

I'd say it's a pretty legit skill to have...If only it worked for me too.

I urge you to try it!

I'm not sure my *bad pics to coins( ninja skills are anywhere your level...I don't have as much to work with as you.

Interesting topic, always. I agree it is normal to have a lot of trash. And sifting out your own photos is a skill that also gets developed constantly. One year you like them, next you don't...This is the way it is.

Also, bad results are necessary in order to achieve really good and interesting results. Otherwise, there's no experiment, no brave attempts at the next height, and so on...

And I saw a challenge within this post. I shall try blowing up that background at 35 mm and F 4 and perhaps share my bad results ;)

Keep on!

You must always keep doing more and trying different things, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t :)

Quite so.

Besides, if you kept them, then you find something in each of them, something you can't yet discard.

I have picked your post for my daily voting initiative! Keep it up and Steem on!

Oh how fantastic, more people need to see my failed photos...

Bit harsh on your face. If I had to live with it I think it would be do-able.

Luckily I’m single AF so nobody else has to live with this face.

Funny all those pics had value, and beauty perhaps not presented as you desired, but nevertheless there is beauty to be found, with those with eyes to see...
Giant Hugs<3<3<3

Keep posting these ones you don't really like! They have a great - different quality

Pfffsss, you guys really are mental.

Haha! I'm trying to come up with an explanation of why i like them but that's a job for a writer or a critic. Out of my pay range, so i will just say i like them and do more occasionally!
