New Books Tuesday: October 16

in #books6 years ago

Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

Not a huge list this week, but some huge books. Let's get into it.

Mutiny at Vesta (Shieldrunner Pirates #2) by R.E. Stearns

Last year's Barbary Station was good, but also a bit disappointing. The promise of badass lesbian pirates was a bit bogged down by the starring duo spending the entire book trying to become the pirates they wanted to be. The sequel has them finally entrenched in the pirate team they wanted to join.

Treason of Hawks (The Shadow #4) by Lila Bowen

Lila Bowen's The Shadow has been one of my favorite fantasy series of the decade. I've been very sad to see that from the third book on, they haven't bee getting audiobooks. So now I'm two books behind, and I really need to catch up to this awesome weird west series.

The Consuming Fire (Interdependency #2) by John Scalzi

The sequel to award nominated The Collapsing Empire is probably going to be the best selling science fiction book published this year. I should probably read this series. Scalzi's good.

The Wastelanders by K.S. Merbeth

This book collects Merbeth books Bite and Raid, a pair of post apocalyptic novels said to be reminiscent of Mad Max Fury Road.

Trial by Treason (Enchanter General #2) by Dave Duncan

This series, by the prolific Duncan, takes place in a fantastic version of 12th century England, and is well reviewed.

The Black Khan (Khorasan Archives #2) by Ausma Zehanat Khan

The sequel to Ausma Zehanat Khan's The Bloodprint is very well reviewed, though probably a bit too grimdark for me. People love the grimdark, but the world is a bit too dark for that right now.

The Bartered Brides (Elemental Masters #13) by Mercedes Lackey

Lackey is a legend, and this is book 13 in a series. If you're into the series, you're probably delighted to know a new one is out.

Bullet Catcher by Joaquin Lowe

Weird west YA is certainly an interesting mix.

Wind Rider (Tales of a New World #3) by P.C. Cast

This fantasy series for young readers is about a drastically altered world with gods and animal friends.

A Sorrow Fierce and Falling (Kingdom on Fire #3) by Jessica Cluess

The final book in the fantasy trilogy that made Cluess' name in fantasy fiction. People love this series.

Crown of Thunder (Beasts Made of Night #2) by Tochi Onyebuchi

The sequel to the well received, and famously dark, **Beasts Made of Night **.

The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror 2018 Edition edited by Paula Guran

This Best Of collection has stories by some of the finest writers in the genre, such as Cassandra Khaw, Aliette de Bodard, and Jeffrey Ford. Highlighted by Rebecca Roanhorse's award winning "Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™."

Riddance, Or: The Sybil Joines Vocational School for Ghost Speakers and Hearing-Mouth Children by Shelley Jackson

This historical horror murder mystery is getting some amazing reviews, and is probably too scary for me.

I Am Behind You by John Ajvide Lindqvist

The start of a new horror series by the beloved author of Let The Right One In. Swedish thrillers are usually too creepy for my delicate sensibilities, so Swedish horror is right out.

The Book of Magic by Gardner Dozois

We end this week with a book that is sure to be a delight, but which also makes me very sad. This may be the last major anthology edited by the late great Dozois, editor of so many great anthologies and past editor of Asimov's. The list of contributors is astounding, and includes George R.R. Martin, Elizabeth Bear, Kate Elliott, Lavie Tidhar, Megan Lindholm, and Tim Powers.

What are you looking forward to reading?
