New Books Tuesday: September 11

in #books6 years ago

Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

They Might Be Giants have a song named "Older," with the refrain "You're older than you've ever been, and now you're even older." This refrain could, with some adjustments, refer to this week, but not as a counting of age. For this, you see, is a week in which we have a book each by those two paragons of literature, the Older siblings.

State Tectonics (Centenal Cycle #3) by Malka Older

We start with the sister of the Older clan. the brilliant Malka, with the third volume of her terrific Centenal Cycle. I'm a big fan of this series, and will be picking this one up as soon as possible. This is brilliant science fiction, dealing with the politics of the late 21st century.

Dactyl Hill Squad by Daniel José Older

Malka's brother Daniel has given us fantasy tales for adults and teens, and now has a book for kids. But this is a book for kids that puts dinosaurs in the US Civil war, so I may very well read it despite being quite a bit beyond the target age. Plus, I read all of DJO's previous novels, so I may as well keep up the streak.

Port of Shadows (Chronicles of the Black Company #3) by Glen Cook

It's been 18 years since we've had a new Black Company novel by Glen Cook. The classic series has almost been forgotten, but re-emerges now with this brand new volume, taking place after the events of The White Rose, the final novel in the original trilogy. The copy calls Cook "The grandfather of grimdark," but while his fantasy was always in the grunt level, I never really thought of it as all that dark and grim.

The Navigator’s Touch (Seafarer’s Kiss #2) by Julia Ember

This YA novel's cover intrigues me, as does the promise of Viking fantasy with mermaids. I haven't read the first one, though.

Rule by Ellen Goodlett

This debut fantasy, the start of a new series, pits three sisters in a battle to inherit the throne. Goodreads reviews seem mixed at best, unfortunately.

The Late Great Wizard by Sara Hanover

This contemporary portal fantasy debut hits the ground running by having a really awesome title. Plus, I like portal fantasies.

Attack of the 50 Foot Wallflower by Christian McKay Heidicker

Speaking of awesome titles, this one is even better. And this novel of monsters and family is getting a lot of buzz.

The Lantern’s Ember by Colleen Houck

This YA romance of the land of the dead seems interesting, but isn't gathering a lot of praise.

Tremontaine Season 4 by Ellen Kushner et al

This is the fourth and final season of the Serial Box series that serves as a prequel to Kushner's classic novel Swordspoint. Chocolate, duels, and queerness ahoy!

As She Ascends (Fallen Isles #2) by Jodi Meadows

The sequel to Meadows' successful - and somewhat controversial - "Before She Ignites".

Deep Blue (Second Species #2) by Jane O’Reilly

A science fiction sequel with pirates and family issues. Seems fun!

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker

A story taking place during the Iliad, with actual central roles for women? You have my attention.

The Biggerers by Amy Lilwall

This dystopia about people who are engineered to be one foot tall and placid, essentially pets, seems soooooooooo creepy. Far too creepy for me. Great title and cover, though.

The Echo Room by Parker Peevyhouse

I was kinda surprised to see that this super creepy sounding novel is a YA. Teens these days are way hardier than I have ever been.

What are you looking forward to reading?
