New Books Tuesday: September 18

in #books6 years ago

Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

It's another fun week of new books, friends. With the spotlight going to a book I am quite emotionally invested in.

Unbroken: 13 Stories Starring Disabled Teens edited by Marieke Nijkamp

"A YA Anthology of short stories featuring disabled teens, written by #OwnVoices disabled authors." I mean, this is such an important book. This is a book teens need to have available to them. And what a fantastic group of writers. Disclaimer: I am somewhat friendly online with about half the authors of this anthology, and had the privilege of watching last year's Hugo awards alongside its bestselling editor. But that just means that I can tell you that this book is a labor of love by an amazing group of people. Give it to the teen in your life, or buy it for the teen in your heart.

Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds by Brandon Sanderson

It's the new Brandon Sanderson book. You've probably had it on pre-order for a while.

The Deepest Roots by Miranda Asebedo

From the description, this kinda feels like Maggie Stiefvater's Raven cycle, but with three girls instead of four boys. That's a good thing.

The Queen of Crows (Sacred Throne #2) by Myke Cole

Folks seemed to like The Armored Saint, so I reckon book 2 will be popular as well. I haven't read Cole, but he seems like a good dude.

What the Woods Keep by Katya de Becerra

Science fiction + fantasy + mystery. That can either be a clusterfuck or a triumph. Glad to say early word is good!

The Iron Flower (Black Witch Chronicles #2) by Laurie Forest

This is the second book in Forest's YA romance series. There's darkness and evil and a romantic triangle. Reviews are very good.

Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton

It's the new Tessa Gratton book. Unlike much of her previous work, this one appears to be a standalone. There's a devil, and a village, and a witch. I suspect none of them will be as tropetastic as they sound.

Time’s Convert by Deborah Harkness

While not officially part of the same series, this novel is set in the same world as Harkness's wildly popular All Souls trilogy. That's the same trilogy that starts with "A Discovery of Witches." You may have heard about that one, as the TV adaptation made its UK debut a few days ago.

Afterimage) by Naomi Hughes

One woman survives an explosion that level a part of a city. She has to figure out what happened, and the only one to help her is a boy in a lab coat. A transparent boy in a lab coat, who may be a ghost, and maybe a figment. I am intrigued.

Wildcard (Warcross #2) by Marie Lu

Lu's Warcross was a phenomenal success (we sure have a bunch of sequels to phenomenal successes this week). This is the sequel.

Battlestar Suburbia by Chris McCrudden

What a great title! It's a science fiction comedy, which is a hard thing to get right. Reviews are good!

Mecha Samurai Empire (United States of Japan #2) by Peter Tieryas

I didn't read "United States of Japan," which is beloved by many folks I know. And that's on me. This is not a sequel, but a standalone in the same universe.

We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix

This is, as I understand it, a novel of horror and heavy metal. So that's definitely a thing, and probably not for me.

Through Darkest Europe by Harry Turtledove

Harry Turtledove seems to write at least half of all alternate history books. This one, where the roles of Europe and Africa are reversed, seems to have an interesting premise, no aliens, and neither of the World Wars, so that's a plus.

New Fears II: Brand New Horror Stories by Masters of the Macabre edited by Mark Morris

We end as we began: With an anthology. I'm obviously never gonna read this book. It's horror, and it's got flies on the cover. But there's an Angela Slatter story in it, and a Chaz Brenchley. I'm fond of both of them.

What are you looking forward to reading?
