New Books Tuesday: August 14

in #books6 years ago

Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

While not quite the mega release day we had last week, the second week in August isn't messing around either. We've got an entire pile of books coming out, though none is quite the same "must buy" level of some of last week's.

Stars Uncharted by S.K. Dunstall

This is a space opera of exploration and mystery and an evil company. It looks super fun!

Ball Lightning by Cixin Liu, translated by Joel Martinsen

Cixin Liu is probably the most heralded current sf author who I am not interested in reading. His stuff is too hard-sf for my taste, and too military in this case.

Noumenon Infinity by Marina J. Lostetter

I still haven't read Noumenon, Lostetter well received space opera for which this is a sequel. Which is a shame, both because of the good reviews, and because I really like Lostetter online.

Severance by Ling Ma

I am super intrigued by this one, a novel that's post apocalypse and office culture send-up in one satirical package. This seems like it may very well be my jam.

The Million by Karl Schroeder

The first of this week's new Tor.com novellas is very intriguing. In a future where one million people live on Earth in utter luxury, and only have to suffer the billions visiting every thirty years, one young man is an illegal: One of the visitors, living on earth among the Million.

Denied (Luna Lake #3) by Cathy Clamp

This is the third, final, and apparently also stand-alone novel in a paranormal romance series of bear shifters. Because, apparently, they don't want to use the term "Werebears." But I sure do!

Julia Unbound (The Witch’s Child #3) by Catherine Egan

This, final, and most emphatically not stand alone novel in the Witch's Child trilogy, a series of intrigue, conspiracy, and magic.

Every River Runs to Salt by Rachael K. Jones

This is the second of this week's Tor.com novellas, and may be the week's most intriguing novel. Rachael K. Jones is an excellent writer, and this novel has a heroine who's roommate stole the ocean, and then vanished.

Wild Hunger (Heirs of Chicagoland #1) by Chloe Neill

If you've read Chloe Neil's Chicagoland Vampire series, you are probably here for the spinoff. If not, then a series that follows up on a 13 book series may be too much.

Black Lotus Kiss (Brimstone Files #2) by Jason Ridler

This is the second novel in a series of hard-boiled detective novels, with magic, taking place in 1970's LA.

Moderan by David R. Bunch

This is a re-issues of the dark, satirical dystopian cyborg stories of the late Bunch, originally released in 1970.

Relic by Alan Dean Foster

Veteran author Foster has written many novelizations, but also quite a few original works. This new novel sees the last known human in the galaxy try and find humanity's mythical origin planet, in the hopes that he is not alone.

The Moons of Barsk (Barsk #2) by Lawrence M. Schoen

I was supposed to like Barsk. Every sign pointed to "Didi will like this." Original, well reviewed, liked by people I trust. I couldn't get into it. I didn't finish it. Space elephants will have to go on without me.

The Sea Queen by Linnea Hartsuyker

This is the second novel in a series that seems to be nine parts historical fiction about the Vikings, and one part fantasy.

Alien Virus Love Disaster: Stories by Abbey Mei Otis

I have not read Abbey Mei Otis, but when your short story collection is published by Small Beer Press, one half of which is brilliant short fiction author Kelly Link, I take notice.

Pinnacle City: A Superhero Noir by Matt Carter & Fiona J.R. Titchenell

And we've got another noir mashup, this time with superheroes. Noir is super hot right now, it seems.

What are you looking forward to reading?
