Random Japan Index // The First Dozen

in #randomjapan6 years ago

Steemit does many things right, but it does many things wrong too. Old content is more or less hidden and therefore somewhat inaccessible; furthermore, we are somewhat discouraged from caring about old content anyway, because, after all, we don’t get paid for anything older than 7 days.

I care about old content, though. And I want to make it easily available. Without any way to link in sidebars or menus, we are left with the idea of an index post, which is exactly what it sounds like: an index; or, in this case, an index of all the photos from the first dozen posts in this series.

Let’s keep this as simple as possible. Two sections: photos and posts. No titles for the photos. Each photo will be a link to the post that photo first appeared in. If you are interested in reading more about said photo, follow the link and read what I wrote about it in the original post. The post index will be a simple list of posts.

Whew. Too wordy. Sorry. Without further ado, on with the show.

The Photos

The Posts

  1. Intro and Dancing Torii
  2. Busy Night
  3. The Store of the Beast
  4. Like a Boss
  5. Swimming Hole Warning
  6. Gotta Be the Hat
  7. The Walls Have Eyes
  8. Star Wars Coffee and Silly Coffee Haiku
  9. The Sake Corner
  10. Study or Play
  11. Street Art
  12. Buying Tickets

And that is that. Any favorites? Needless to say, if you enjoyed anything here stick around for more daily posts and occasional index posts. Also follow #randomjapan and #randomasia for more great photos of random things from Japan and from Asia in general from my friends @kaliju, @kafkanarchy84, @maxinpower, @boxcarblue, and anyone else who wants to join in on the fun.

Hi there David LaSpina is an American photographer lost in Japan, trying to capture the beauty of this country one photo at a time.

Good ideas. I am in favor of being able to search old content and getting paid too!

Let's hope Steemit reconsiders how they handle older posts in the future.

I want to start reposting my old old old content. Let's say a month from now you will have gained a couple of new followers - can we really expect them to go back in time and dig up our stuff? Re-posting is the way to go, especially if it's a work of art and not just a debate/opinion kind of a topic. It's like revisiting museums looking at the same thing. Or, consider photographers hosting their live galleries around the world - same works, different crowd. Re-posting your old stuff is the way to simulate these sort ofbi-monthly gallery exhibitions. Plus, this time around those same posts that generated 0 SBD can now be valued at a higher level with new people checking in on your blogroll. Makes sense? We gotta do a live chat on our discord and talk these things and more :D

I like your ideas. Thinking of this as more of a gallery or exhibition instead of a book is a really useful way to look at a blog I think, or at least this Steemit blog. Fantastic! I may use that idea.

I know I know, we need to have chatting time. Lately that is hard to find. As a freelancer, my schedule is kind of feast or famine, and lately it has been overwhelming. But we'll find time soon I hope. I want to chat with you and still have that idea for a podcast brewing in my head.

An index is always great.

The only downside is you can't edit it.
They should let you nominate some posts as "Always editable," and sure, make them ineligible to earn money, but still.

Great to see you doing this, and tip from someone who made such a post but then forgot to save the markdown to make it easier to make the next installment - save the markdown of this post somewhere. Will save you some precious minutes next time!
(Or for me, who went for multiple tables, several hours >.>)

That would be a welcome idea. Being able to "pin" one or two posts to a sidebar would be another. I hope Steemit does something about this in the future.

Way ahead of you buddy—I have several templates saved and ready to use in my text expansion app, and I save all my posts locally anyway (I actually write everything in multimarkdown, then save, convert to regular markdown with an app, and finally copy and paste into Busy for posting)

I did plan to save my index, then forgot about it for a couple of days and then it left the editing phase...

At least allow me to "View Source" like RES does on Reddit, even if I can't edit. Cause that was hours' worth of editing, heh.

Excellent work. These are some great photos man.

I agree with you - that's one thing I wish Steemit would have. We need to be able to search by category and dates for old posts/topics/tags. I like that I can look back at my Wordpress Blog and find things easier and other people can search for things that interest them on my blog also.

Yes, that was a very nice feature of my Wordpress blog when I still had one, the ability to gather posts by tag/date/time/etc and pull them all into a menu or whatever. I would really love to have that kind of power here. It is mainly for that reason that I am and have been thinking about bringing back my Wordpress blog one of these days.
