Pillars of Eternity Complete Edition Review - Performs the impossible

A console version of Pillars of Eternity? 'Impossible!', Called in a choir. Now, two years after the first release, the game is released again, under the name of Pillars of Eternity Complete Edition . As the name suggests, this is the most complete version, including all patches and the two parts of the lavish expansion 'The White March'. And - of course - the interface is fully customized for controlling the controller and playing on a television.

The latter gave birth to many fans. Because, how do you get Pillars of Eternity, an RPG with endless possibilities for collecting weapons, adjusting and upgrading your characters, tampering with ingredients and firing spells and powers, decent playable on a controller?

Well, just to go home with the door: Paradox Arctic, the studio responsible for the port, has done miracles with the transit to the controllers. Somehow, they managed to bring the many buttons and buttons into the PC version in just a few buttons on the Xbox One and PS4 controllers.

For example, just holding the left trigger, you get a wheel with tabs like the questlog, the level system and the inventory. If you hold the right trigger, you will get a bit of all the fighting options, such as special forces, determining your team formation and turning the computer on or off.

Actually, each button on the controller has one or more functions. Selecting the characters takes place through the bumpers. If you hold any of these buttons longer then you can select the entire company at once. This resolved the lack of a mouse in one click.

At least so convenient, the game automatically lights up objects and characters when you get closer to your cursor so you can easily get in touch with it. That's useful, because in the atmospheric world of Pillars, with all its hidden secrets and mysterious twists, you do not want to go wrong. Whether you are wandering in a swampy swamp or in a deserted ghost town with your soldiers and wizards, every cottage, cave or dungeon must and will be searched.

For this reason, it is a sin that the console version of Pillars of Eternity is technically far from perfect. Especially during the fighting, if there is much to be seen on the screen, the framerate wants to collapse again. Fortunately, in the case of Pillars, it does not matter, because with X you can temporarily pause the fighting to position your fighters and give orders.

No, the framerate problems are not a big problem. The terribly long loading times do. In the prologue, it's not so bad yet, but as the story progresses and the save file becomes heavier, even the most simple actions will be charging cargo screens.

Are you in a house? Then you can take a minute to take it easy. And that's certainly true of a game like Pillars, which you must have angelengeduld because of the many dialogues and texts, very bad.

Dike of an RPG, alway

Apart from that, Pillars of Eternity remains a dike of an RPG on the consoles. Everything that makes the PC version exceptionally good will be done again. Freedom of choice is given a new dimension here: you have literally everything to say. Team members can adjust to the smallest detail, from race, origin, class appearance to special skills. Events can be put to your own by means of decisions that still influence the story far.

For the players familiar with Baldur's Gate , Pillars of Eternity is a celebration of recognition. This is not only due to the isometric perspective, but also because of the difficulty. The game is far from easy and even at the lowest level the fighting is particularly spicy. Fortunately, there is a special position indicating Pillars mainly for the story and experience.

And even then Pillars is not the easiest game. You need to spend a lot of time and energy, want to get the most out of the experience. That means: read a lot, calm down the events on you and enjoy the various environments and characters. That's why Pillars are not for everyone on the Xbox One, but invest in it and you're happily playing one of the best rpgs of the moment.

What was unprecedented is reality: Pillars of Eternity plays fantastic on the consoles. For an RPG that is so profound and complex, it's amazing how intuitively the controller is operating on the controller. Is the PC version better? Yes, but it is not about here.
