Travels With Connie #35 Nogales to Bisbee

in #motorcycle6 years ago

Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.

More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.

Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.

Not Connie

Sharp eyed readers will note that this is not Connie. It is my VStrom. This stretch of road is one of the better stretches on this trip, the VStrom is much better suited to this sort of road.

I rode to Nogales by a back route that took me through several wonderful small Arizona towns. When I got into Nogales I turned east just north of the Mexican border. The road was paved for about 5 miles and then just kept getting progressively worse.

Roadside Marker

When I stopped to take a picture of this unique memorial to an unknown road fatality I had a pickup stop. It was the only vehicle I was to see on this road. It was a rancher and his wife that were fairly amazed that I was riding a motorcycle through. Or that I was going through at all. They told me about three likely spots for camping on their property. Pretty cool introduction to the area.

The Road Less Traveled

I rode right past the rancher's suggestions. I wanted to have breakfast in Bisbee so I wanted to get closer. I ended up taking this side road which obviously doesn't get much traffic.

Home Sweet Home

I ended up about 1/2 mile off the 'main' road, which I thought was probably plenty, as I had only seen the single vehicle. Silly me. Just before it got dark I had a visit from a Border Patrol officer that told me I was right in a smuggler coridor. It was too late to move (stars were shining) so I opted to stay. There had to be at least 10 Border Patrol Vehicles that ran up and down the border road all night long.

Morning

It was a restless night. The amount of traffic from the Border Patrol and the smuggler warning made for a less than restful night. It's a shame, because it's a great place to camp.

This is what my campsite normally looks like. I see that I had coffee cooking and a cigar burning. Life is Good!

All that and curb side service! It doesn't take me too long to pack up, so I was on my way within half an hour of sun up.

Signs of the Times

This yield sign made me giggle. After the Border Patrol finished their day at sun up it was a LONG time until I saw another vehicle. I stopped at the sign just in case.

Next post will feature an entirely unexpected place. I hope you will come back for more of the ride.

What a beautiful route you chose. I have camped in parks alone but I don't think I have what it takes to stay out somewhere that remote all by myself. I wish I could or would have long ago when it was safer. Definitely looked like a beautiful camp spot and maybe the running of the patrol all night kept you safe. I really liked the picture of the Roadside Marker. It is nice you noticed and thought about it. The patina is beautiful. I am looking forward to the next stop.

I routinely camp away from the crowd :) I just do. Obviously, I've never had a problem.

It's such a remote road, and so lightly traveled it really made that marker stand out. Then there was the look of it, I had to stop. I'm glad I did, I had a really pleasant visit with the ranchers. I probably should have camped on the edge of their property in an old homestead site. It was pretty, but as it turns out, I'm glad I made the extra mileage. I was really hungry by the time I hit civilization :)

Thanks for the warm words. I appreciate them.

This is the real advantage of knowing how to ride a motorbike. You can go almost anywhere. It's something I have to learn. I know how to bike but motorbikes are heavy for me.

That campsite looks pretty serene and with coffee and cigar ( although I don't smoke) life is indeed good! :)

I'd suggest you try some of the new generation of Scooters. Everybody makes them, they are light and do surprisingly well on the road. I have friends that have ridden over much of India and SE Asia. They fly over, buy scooters and sell them when they leave. It's a pretty cool deal.

For my money, there is no finer resting place for the stub of a good cigar than a campfire. It just seems to close the loop :)

Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate them.

Thanks for the advice, scooters are common here. Surprising that I still don't know how to use them :D

I was in Myanmar and tried the e-bikes, which looks like smaller scooters. I did a test drive and the owner didn't allow me to rent it lol. Gotta practice or have some lessons.

This looks like a dream life :) I always enjoy sleeping in a tent, I was even in scouts, maybe that is where I first fell in love with nature.

It's just what I love to do. Once in a while with people, often alone. There is just something magical for me about it.

Thanks Petra.

I was about to say Connie’s lost a few pounds …. keep riding and smiling.

Yeah. Connie's lost a little :) Though I usually load the VStrom like a rented mule...

Thanks for sharing this. This is my first time visiting your page. I saw you at the Q- discord page this morning where I am quite active.

It is an interesting read. Very few people actually travel in that area, rough roads on a motorcycle can be a tiring. I don’t know which time of the year you did it, but heat is my primary worry. Your tent looks cool in that open field.

Hi from a fellow qurite!

It was late fall, very temperature appropriate. I live in Yuma, so I watch pretty carefully :)

Thanks for the kind words. Up to a certain point, the less traveled road is my choice. And with this bike it can be pretty miserable before I have to give up.

This is exactly the kind of things that feed the soul!

I am glad you like it. It certainly feeds my soul!

spent a lot of time in Az. (9 years) know bisbee well!! good post!!

I just love it here. It'll take me a post or two to actually hit Bisbee, but it's coming soon. It's one of my favorite Arizona towns!

you bet...and if you ever are in Tubac..(see my prior posts, one on bisbee, one on tubac) just south is Tumacacori..about 300 pop. a cool restaurant called Wisdoms...decent Mex. food nice place, great guy Mr. Wisdom..I did a post recently on his place!! take care.. and safe travels.

Is that the place with the big chicken? Or the place that makes the deep fried fruit roll-ups? I've eaten at both...
