1976 - A whole heap of heavy metal for x-daysofmusicsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #x-daysofmusic6 years ago (edited)

Another year of this challenge set up by @backinblackdevil.

The most memorable bit of culture for me in '76 was Children of the Stones. Yer basic kids' TV sci-fi/horror wherein a family get caught in a time-loop involving the repeated ritual sacrifice of an entire village. The opening credits scared the hell out of me, let alone the story...

They knew how to make children's entertainment in those days

Rush - 2112

An official video from 1976. Lousy sound, lousy vision, but feel the vintage!
My first Rush album was All The World's A Stage. Can't remember when or how, but I do remember listening to it and being blown away by the awesome PROGness of it all (even though I don't think we had 'prog rock' in those days). Still love it. Still think Ayn Rand was a nutter (fun fact: 2112 is based on her story 'Anthem', which title Rush had already used for an earlier album. Poor forward planning, there chaps.)

Kiss - Detroit Rock City

From Destroyer
The best song from the only decent album they did. A Bob Ezrin production, which explains a lot. He was Alice Cooper's producer for all the class ic albums, and went on to produce, well, all of THESE. I've managed to avoid seeing Kiss in concert. All the footage I've seen of them from the last umpteen years has been awful, which at least maintains their reputation as being a triumph of style over substance.

Queen - Tie Your Mother Down

From A Day At The Races. Official video
For a long time I prefered ...Races over A Night At The Opera. A more consistent bunch of songs with none of the dross (e.g. Seaside Redezvous). This song has everything you need from Queen - silly lyrics, stampeding drums, big guitars and bigger hair.

Rainbow - Stargazer

From Rising. Nicely faked video
Ronnie James Dio was one of the great voices in heavy metal. This is probably the daftest thig he wrote with Ritchie Blackmore, and it's fantastic. A pseudo-biblical epic with a satsfying ending and lots of thrashing around from all concerned. And Cozy Powell left us too soon.

Blue Öyster Cult - ETI (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)

From Agents of Fortune
A bit of science-fiction silliness that might be part of the 'Imaginos' saga. 'Imaginos' was a loose narrative of connected songs dating from BÖCs first album and cropping up throughout the time Sandy pearlman was involved. Water-breathing humans, astral beings, a black mirror and the conquest of South America and various conspiracy theories come together in an incoherent fashion.
This album also had Dont Fear The Reaper, but I'm avoiding cowbells.

My days of music: 1967 - 1968 - 1969 - 1970 - 1971 - 1972 - 1973 - 1974 - 1975

The Rainbow song is decent, not heard it before and 8 mins.. that prog territory!

Rainbow is maybe a bit classical for your tastes, but glad to introduce to their music. As @steevc says, they changed a bit over the years and the Joe Lynn Turner era had the rather wonderful Difficult to Cure album.

I know them from their 80's singles, 'Since you've been gone' etc.., but haven't looked into the back catalogue.
