1970: I'm living in the 70's for x-daysofmusicsteemCreated with Sketch.

Year four of this challenge set up by @backinblackdevil.

1970 - the year of the first Glastonbury Festival and the last Isle of Wight Festival until the 1990s. The August was uneventful, it seems. In October, we lost Janis...

Janis Joplin - Move Over

From Pearl, released in January '71

The documentary Little Girl Blue is an excellent piece of work; the interviews are with people who knew Janis, rather than the usual business of modern stars who claim an influence. The description of her final days is heart-breaking. This song is unusual in being credited purely to Joplin, whereas it took three people to write 'Mercedes Benz'.

Black Sabbath - War Pigs

Recorded in Paris

A bit of classic Sabbath from Paranoid. The Classic Albums show on the making of their first two albums is well worth a watch, while we're thinking of documentaries. Like Hendrix's flaying of 'Star Spangled Banner', this starts with sirens, planes and guns before we even get to the riff. From then on it's all about harvesting bodies. There was more to Black Sabbath than met the eye, and it is showcased on this album 'War Pigs' and 'Hand of Doom' show Geezer Butler was trying to deliver something a little thoughtful, while Space Caravan is a lovely bit of acoustic jazz.

Frank Zappa - Chunga's Revenge

No contemporary live video for this

The album Chunga's Revenge takes Zappa from Hot Rats to 200 Motels, and combines equal shares of jazz-rock and the comedy songs that had him labelled as misogynist, misanthrope and generally unpleasant. This track however is from the Hot Rats sessions and is a bit of musical loveliness Zappa returned to throughout his career.
Frank was busy in 1970. Not only did he put out three albums and do a couple of tours, but he produced one of the most infamous albums of all time:

Captain Beefheart - Moonlight on Vermont

From Trout Mask Replica. No live videos available

This is about as accessible as Trout Mask Replica gets. It's a difficult listen and not my favourite Beefheart album, but 'Moonlight on Vermont' stands up well, and I love the end section.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Ohio

No live video for this either

Written and recorded in a couple of weeks, and released as a single in June, this is one of the great protest songs of the 70s and a stunning performance from the band. The form is a Neil Young song rather than CSN&Y, but that's splitting hairs. They don't make 'em like this anymore, and it's a damn shame.

All the above videos are taken from YouTube, mostly courtesy of people who don't hold the rights.

The rules are to be interpreted as you like really, but are something like this:
Pick years from when you were born to now. It really doesn't have to be all of them
Feature some songs from one of those years in a post with some details about why you like them. You can write something about the year in general too.

My days of music: 1967 - 1968 - 1969

Sort:

Not often you hear the original and think it's better than the cover your fav band did
But Janice just blew me away with "Move Over"
I first heard the song on Slade's "Old New, Borrowed, and Blue," album but wasn't over impressed with it
Especially against their new tracks such as "Do we Still Do It."
Feast your ears on this:

Wow! - I do like Slade, but never listened to the early albums. In Australia, my other half grew up listening to bands like Skyhooks. This for the Iron Maiden fans out there...

@hockney
Nice selection of songs! (Specially: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Ohio).
😊

Cheerios!

Thanks Fenix!
