Round One of the Shipwreck Creative Writing Challenge

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

Hello everyone!

This is the post that officially launches the Shipwreck Writing Challenge!

Have fun!

ROUND 1

If you are a participant (check the table with all the participants, the sponsors and the rules here) then continue reading the three options and choose only one. There are 3 different stories and you have to finish the one you choose. You have 7 days to write your story.

If you are not a participant of this contest you are also free to read one of the 3 options and submit your story within the next 7 days. I will feature your stories in a separate table. You won’t be eligible for the rewards, but you’ll still have a chance to practice your writing skills and earn the reward from your own post.

Option 1: Amanda’s Honeymoon

Amanda woke up teased by the sounds of the teapot whistle. Rayan has just finished preparing a tasty breakfast. She stayed one last minute in the bed trying to imagine their trip today. They were going to a beautiful island of Java. She felt so excited about everything that she couldn’t stay in the bed anymore.

It was her who suggested a ferry trip to the exotic island. They were enjoying their honeymoon in a five star hotel on the beach line.

Amanda is a famous fiction writer residing in her favorite house at Monteray with a view over the bay. One autumn night, one year ago she presented her latest fiction novel at one of the San Hose’s art galleries. And there she met him. He approached her holding a glass of red wine and asked her if she would give an interview for Reed Magazine. That was her future husband Ryan.

About a year later they got married and here they are. They were all over themselves enjoying the beginning of their family life.

Amanda ate the tasty Bubur Ayam and finished her cup of Jasmine tea that she enjoyed so much!

Once she was done with the makeup she took Rayan by hand and quickly escaped from the hotel with broad smiles on their faces.

Ten minutes later they arrived at the port and saw a beautiful white board of their ferry Senopati Nusantara.

Continue the story from here.

*Remember: You have a full freedom to continue this story. Have in mind that on the same day later the MV Senopati Nusantara shipwrecked.

Option 2: Earnest

-- Cheers mates!
-- Cheers Earnest! Happy Birthday old man!

Today Earnest was celebrating his 45th birthday and he was celebrating it with Tommy and Lance who were his childhood friends. Three of them were the same age, all single and desperate.

Yesterday they landed on the East London Airport in Eastern Cape prepared for an exciting journey on the MTS Oceanos cruise.

It was the night of August 3 a bit after 9 p.m. in the evening. They were trying to calculate what is the percentage of all single women out of all 571 passengers on the ship.

Seems like it wasn’t the best occasion for meeting new people as most of the passengers were already lying in their beds.

Moss Hills and his wife Tracy were entertaining the audience at the restaurant. There were not more than 30 people including Earnest, Tommy and Lance applauding them after each song.

It was almost 9.30.

The beer was over and Earnest, who was already half drunk decided to buy one more beer for three of them. He approached the bar with a big smile on his face staring at Stacey who’s blue eyes made him melt everytime he was staring at her.

Suddenly….

If you pick this one continue the story from here.

Option 3: Jason and Sarah

-- Ok. Thank you so much! Have a nice day! Bye!

Jason closed his phone and went out on the balcony. He stared at the clouds and felt goose bumps all over his body. He had never felt like this before.

Winning two tickets for 7-night Mediterranean Cruise from Civitavecchia was his most desired dream. It was the beginning of year and until yesterday he was struggling to choose the best gift for his girlfriend’s birthday on January 13.

Jason was a 22 year-old student studying Business Analytics at the University of Bologna, Italy. He was in love with his girlfriend Sarah for the last 6 months.

It was January 8 and they had to show at Cruise Terminal in the morning of January 13.

She was the happiest girl when he surprised her with the pleasant news later that night. They both enjoyed looking at the itinerary that included visiting Tuskany’s Isola del Giglio and Savona.

Four days later they arrived at Terminal A of the Cruise Terminal complex. It was 8.55 a.m. and they still had 40 minutes before boarding on their cruise Costa Concordia.

Continue the story from here.

Do each of these end in a shipwreck, or just the first one?

Yes, I was wondering the same...

Senopati Nusantara, MTS Oceanos and Costa Concordia all and up in a shipwreck. I have described some protagonists and you are completely free on deciding what to do with them. You could introduce new protagonists if you wish as well.

Include the shipwreck somehow, but you don't need to follow the traditional line of survivors trying to escape a shipwreck.

The third one (Concordia) ended in a shipwreck in real life (that was the cruise ship tipped on its side that we all remember). Not sure if the second one is a historical reference, but my feeling is that all 3 involve a shipwreck of some kind, and our story should reflect that. (steemfluencer can correct me though!)

The second one refers to the MTS Oceanos - another famous one that happened in 1991. I spent a lot of hours researching for shipwreck disasters in 19th, 20th and 21th century. Tried to choose the ones that could turn into great stories.

@negativer, that's correct - your stories should reflect one of the 3 ships in a way your choose. I tried to predict the kind of story you will write as you are always inventive in your story lines.

Right, I missed the MTS Oceanos link. Looks like we can do a bit of research on the circumstances of the actual shipwrecks as well, to see which scenario we prefer. Thanks!

That's optional. If we had an unlimited time many of us could really dig in and find out many curious fact. For example I managed to discover interviews with survivors. Some of the information is not for people with weak hearts.

Ah, yes, it looks like all 3 are known shipwrecks. OK!

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Twenty passengers set sail that day
For a three week tour, a three week tour.

--Gilligan's Island, more or less

Should be fun!

Pfew! It took me some time to write these beginnings. Hopefully we'll see stories for the TWB collections. Enjoy it!

Thanks @steemfluencer for the writing challenge!

Well, are you are participant, because I haven't noted you in the table. If you are, sincere apologies for missing you.

Unexpected. A bit harder than I thought it would be, compounded by my promise to @trishlarimer to write something funny for my next story. This challenge should be fun!

Make it works for you. In Round 1 I decided to focus on 3 similar kinds of scenarios, but you still have a wide space to develop your own kind of story. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hopefully I'll have the creative juices flowing today to put together the foundation of my submission. Quick question on the prompts - I see in the comments here that rewriting the prompt is acceptable. Do we need to include all of the information in the prompt? For example, if I chose prompt # 2, does my story need to include somewhere in it that Moss Hills and his wife Tracy were performing?

Take your time! No, no need to include the info for Moss Hills. It's just an incredible fact for me and I decided to note it. This time I did a lot of research and I included some links in the text that might help you conduct your own research faster (if you think you'll need it).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the clarification. I think I have an idea for this that's pretty cool. Let's see if I can make it come to life :)

Nice!

Wow. That is a challenge in an unexpected way... Didn't expect such a type of prompt. Is it okay to rewrite the beginning story in your own style/voice, or should you take on the same POV and pace?

It's okay :) Feel free to rewrite the one you choose.

Do we include the beginning we choose? As in the whole thing? And do we attribute it to you?

This is gonna be fun! Thanks for letting me participate!

That's the original format. However this isn't something you should be strict about. As I already told @nobyeni, feel free to rewrite the one you choose. There's no need to attribute if you rewrite it, just mention that this story competes for the the Shipwreck Writing Challenge rewards.
