Lucid Dreaming: A Foot In Both Worlds

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

A lucid dream is a dream during which the dreamer is aware of dreaming. (Wikipedia). Some people practice for years to be able to have a lucid dream. To me, they come naturally...

Sometimes I wake up at night
Not knowing what’s going on

Footsteps in the hallway
Scare the f**ing shit out of me
I run, I hide,
I wish they go away
But they don’t

Until I realize
I’m only dreaming...

A whole new world opens
A world where I’m in control
I choose my path
I explore my possibilities
I rule my world

I hear the sounds
From the daily life
Outside my dream
Trying to wake me up.

I can define them
But I can choose to ignore them
And dream on

I take my steps
Inside my dream
Steps I would never take
When I would be awake

Then the footsteps again
I’m sure it’s my girl coming home
so I wake myself up

Only to find
It was just a dream...

I have a hard time NOT Dreaming, and when I was in my main creative phase I would sleep 4-6 hours a night Max, I am somewhat of a modern day Tesla and I also derived energy from my work. My mind is in problem solving mode during sleep if I do not take sleep meds. During my regular cycles, I must do this in order to engage in "normal activities" or I become tired during the day. Such is Life 🙀

There have been times that the lucid dreaming was so frequent that I took sleep meds just to not dream at all. Lately, I’ve been taking sleep meds for a different reason, and although I haven’t been dreaming because of them for quite some time, I notice the dreams are starting to get through more frequently...

wow, this is powerful @simplymike. I've never experienced a lucid dream before - is it super disorientating or is it a wonderful fantasy?

For the first two years I simply panicked the moment I realized I was dreaming. During that time, I ‘taught’ myself a trick to wake up again.
Almost 2 years ago, I talked about it to a friend of mine, and she told me there was nothing to be afraid of. That it was my dream, and that I was in control. That very night I had another one, and I was indeed fully in control.
They don’t happen as often as they used to these days, but just a couple of weeks ago I had one where I woke up in another dream 8 times in a row. I mean, i thought I woke up, then realized I was dreaming. ‘Woke up’ again, but still in a dream. 8 times in a row (don’t know how I managed to keep count -lol). That was really desorientating. I spent the first hour being awake checking things, touching things, to check I was really awake. That one really messed with my mind.

The one this morning was a bit of both. It was the first time since the one two years ago that I felt fully in control. I made things happen, by choice.
I heard my cats in the real world make noise, and it was a ‘conscious’ choice not to wake up because of it.
Then again, I was so sure I heard my girlfriend come up the stairs, but when I woke up there was nothing. So little bit of both: an adventure ánd desorientating

I'm curious, are you also a very visual learner?

Just a thought....I wonder if you did a little meditation and used this lucid dreaming method at will....how that would change your real world experience....like you are "creating " new experiences for yourself, .....just be sure you're not conjuring up some zombie apocolypse though ..lol

Lol.
I am indeed a visual learner.

I however believe that dreams are meant to process your (un)conscious experiences - I don’t know the right word in English: process, digest, assimilate??

Which means I think controlling them is not a good idea. The reason I used to freak out the moment I realized I was dreaming, is because I’m a terrible control freak in day-to-day life.
The fact that I’m starting to have control in my dreams, I don’t really see that as a plus in my journey of personal growth - lol

Aaah..yeah..I see how that wouldn't be such a good idea.

Feel so bad that I'm fascinated and probing on something that's clearly not so fun for you.

I wish you all the best in your dream world....hope you can unwind in those dreams ;)

Cheers

Don’t feel bad. The whole ‘analyzing-what-is-good-for-my-personal-growth’-thing is like a second nature to me. Lol, it’s a control-thing too.

I am just as fascinated. It might not be good for me, but apparently it is on my path for now. And it wás kinda fun. Lol

Guess it takes one to know one ;)

Cheers. Keep the good stuff coming @simplymike

8 times!? Yikes I had one like that but only went 4 dreams deep! Agreed, it really messes with you! I have only had 1 lucid dream that I remember and I was so excited, in the dream, that it woke me up. So it didn't last too long, but I knew I was in full control. It's truly an awesome experience. I wish I could have more! haha

I used to have fairly consistent dreams of flying. Sometimes I was successful but more often than not I would find myself realizing I was in a dream and going right for flight mode. I would jump up in the air, spread my arms wide and then fall to within inches of the floor (Picture Tom Cruise in the first Mission Impossible) and get frustrated (in dream) that I wasn't successfully able to fly. I hated when this happened. This obviously points to come type of subconscious blocks I have that are still unresolved to this day.

Check out this video from my all time favorite band, the song is about lucid dreaming.... It's called Silent Lucidity.

I discussed the flying thing with someone before, and to be honest, it was one of the first things that crossed my mind when I woke up: damn, why didn’t I think of trying to fly...
Interesting, though, that you were not able to...

I have flied on numerous occasions in my dreams. Sometimes it feels very real even. It happens when i am being chased or i am chasing something.

I hope I will think of it next time :0)

This is so beautiful! I try so hard to lucid dream so that I can eventually perform astral projection. I have had a lucid dream a very few times but not ever when I have been trying.

I’ve been told that some people are trying hard to be able to have lucid dreams. I have not read up about the reason why, though? Is astral projection the main goal, then?

Astral projection is easier once you master lucid dreaming. I don't really know what the big deal is honestly but I see stuff on lucid dreaming all the time. We have a Roku which is like cheaper cable for the tv and they have an entire channel on ways to lucid dream and meditations for it. For me I want to do it for the spiritual aspect so I can open my mind.

You should feel lucky to master it unknowingly 😊, although I am sure they are difficult to deal with if you don't want them or expect it before you fall asleep.

I get that feeling, it happens to me a lot of the time. I initially didn't know how to control myself in the early days and years. As i grew older i understood things better.

I choose when to stop dreaming the dream once it has become to scary, sometimes i wake up, other times i just switch dreams as i think about changing it...all this is happening in the dream.

I told my dad about it when he was alive and said it is a gift...but what to use it for i don't know.
I love the way you shared yours in light poetic manner. Thanks for sharing.

The words just came out this morning. I had to let it out :0)

There are many people that consider it as a gift. I’ve heard about many people (even found one here on SteemIt) who are ‘training’ themselves, meditating, drinking special herbal teas and stuff because they wánt it to happen.
Maybe I should try to find out more about what the reason for that is. What the ‘spiritual’ idea behind it is.

Please update us once you find out.

Oh, I love those dreams, the dreams with-in a dream that just seem to keep going. Playing in the clouds or traveling worm holes in the ground an up the roots of a tree to the highest branch, and launching myself in to the air to fly where ever. So much fun in dreams with in dreams.

Never tried flying... i hope I remember next time :0)

What is life but a dream, man!
Everything and nothing can be real at the same time.

A wonderful poem! Keep on writing!

I am a lucid dreamer, always have been. I have fun with it though as I can control my dreams to go in the direction I want them to go.
Happy to meet another dreamer ^_^ I wish to have more times dreaming sometimes lol.

Maybe a silly question: but in the comments above we have been discussing flying: have you ever tried to fly?
