The comment powered post initiative (The CPPI) - Comment Power for All!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #writing7 years ago

Now that many of us are seeing the immediate effect of our comment upvotes it occurred to me that something powerful could grow out of this.

The Comment Driven Post

A weekly question would be selected for discussion using a vote system so that the majority agree on each week's new topic.

And only three things would be required of people upon seeing my weekly post:

  • Read the question
  • Respond to the question
  • Upvote favourite responses

You don't even need to upvote my post if you don't want to. Up to you.

Let's make this about about the DISCUSSION

I believe this idea creates more of an incentive to engage with the topic and respond intelligently or with humour. Up to you.

It is unlikely that too many upvotes will be given to less positive or rude comments, but what do I know? I've not tried this yet.

One thing is for sure, if your comment is popular, you will be making more of a pay-out than me :)

And I encourage you all to start something along these lines!

It seems to me like a great way to move Steemit away from mindless bot-voting to actual rewarding discussion.

The Promise of my UPVOTE

At 100% my upvote is worth $0.03 (now that I have around 6000 Steem Power).

I know this isn't much but it is my promise to you that if you respond to this post with your thoughts on this idea or some suggestions for discussion topics, I will upvote you (at my current maximum of around 80%).

I would really like the first topic to be chosen by you rather than me.

And once the ball is rolling, let us see where we go from here...

Final Note

I am loving the work of @unmean-stweets and their initiative to upvote awesome comments as a group, bringing even more power & encouragement to those who take the time to write the kind of comments that make people happier and wiser :)

Long Live Steemit!

And Comment Power for all!

Cool idea. I love the fact that comments are getting more attention & more rewards now! They have always been the lifeblood of Steemit, even more so than posts. I suspect there are many more people on the platform who like to read and engage the community through comments, than there are original content creators. To me, nothing is more frustrating than writing a post and seeing it get no comments at all. Even if it were to get $20 in post rewards, I'd consider a comment-less post to be a failure. So I highly encourage the sort of shift we're seeing now towards making comments the first-class Steemit citizens they deserve to be!

"A commentless post" will form a very nice steemit post on it is own! Great to see you celebrating community. We will definitely look at featuring this comment soon! Yours!
By the way, great to see you support this comment-driven initiative by @samstonehill! Let's keep "mining with minds".

Many thanks for your words. And yes, I quite agree. No comments on a post is a rather miserable experience. Hope to see you getting active in the comments once we decide on a juicy topic ;)

Yes, Sam I try to leave comment for each posting thay I have upvoted, but it's a lot of effort because my limited English skill , so sometimes I just leaved as short comment. Nice ! :)

Hahaha, another language in the comments isn't bad at all. Feel free! When the English is running out, leave that other language in the comments perhaps, it will spurs others to learn a new language, create initiatives to translate other languages in the comments or incite people to contact you for a translation. Overall, you will have create further need for all to "mine with minds"; the very genius model upon which steem technology is build. Happy commenting!

Yes..... You are right ! Nice :)

Hahaha, yes!
Be happy!

Even just 'nice' is nice to see :)

nice...:)

Thanks for your nice ;)

But seriously nice initiative.

Thanks. Hopefully see you there :)

Look out for the follow-up post...

@happyphoenix Repeat with me.. your English is great and growing stronger everyday! :)

Okay... I repeat it " my English is great and growing stronger eveyday !". Thank you for your support. Nice ! ;)

That's a great idea! I kinda like the humorous comments the best :)

Thanks for your suggestion. We could potentially start this thing off with a funny question :)

Yeah! the kind of "laughter is the best medicine" stuff @StephenKendall

We sort of have a Chinese chat teahouse recently. https://steemit.com/laodr-teahouse/@deanliu/laodr-tea-house-beta
We started comments in Chinese but there are English too.

I love this! Do you have a set topic for discussion?

Not really. We try to start any topics that come to mind and anyone can shout out anything.

Okay, why not! Thanks for putting me on to this :)

You're welcome

Nice idea! Comments are easier to do.

One topic that comes to mind is how to get businesses to start getting involved with accepting payments through Steemit. It could be nice to purchase things directly with steem dollars.

That is a really strong topic. Thank you. Could work perfectly for the opening week.

I will tag you in if this turns out to be the selected topic.

I've been reading through the comments here and a lot of this feels familiar to me. When I ask for comments and I don't get any it makes me wonder if people really paid attention to my post. On the other hand, I used to teach and I understand that sometimes people have opinions, suggestions etc but they're too timid to voice them (or it could even be a language barrier issue). One of the things I think we'll need to look into is how people can comment on content they like if they aren't that great with words, they tend to be shy or they're just learning the language.

Thanks for your thoughts here. @hilarski has a system that may fit for such people. As way of acknowledging quality posts he responds with just a Youtube video link which is a little animation announcing that your post will be going out on his twitter channel. Am guessing he has lots of followers there :)

That makes sense, maybe it will catch on :)

You know that comments are now worth more because most of the whales are not voting, right? Hopefully HF17 will include the non-compounded vote weighting algorithm for rewards and this will become normal.

Yes, I assumed it was something to do with this. That and the ongoing flagging perhaps?

I am excited to see what happens after HF17, but I wonder when it will actually take place?

Yup, the flagging was not against posts but against whale votes. A lot of people got upset because their applecarts were upturned but a lot more people have seen a noticable increase in the bottom range of post rewards. Which means I am pretty sure that the days of ultra destructive Whale Flags are numbered. I am pleased because I got slapped by a whale a long way back that turned a hundreds reward into nearly nothing (both an unvote and then a flag) and my rep fell to 10 just on this.

It's not right that their power is so amplfied. Whales tend to also be outsiders to the discussion so this kind of power is unjust.

Crazy. I had no idea such things were going on. That is fairly extreme. Also, I had no idea they could affect your rep like that.

And yes, I have seen how the whales tend to be the outsiders.

I feel however as if times are changing now, so hopefully the platform will find a way to distribute rewards fairly.

Something that people don't understand is it is not at all to do with fairness. The way that your vote is not one per person, but one per steem, most 'egalitarian' types would find to be most capitalistic and pig-dog-ish. But within the 'your money talks' rules about how votes are counted in Steem, currently if you can put $25,000 into your account, your voice is amplified over 1000x someone with under $1000. In my opinion this is absurd, and I hope that this is going to be changed soon.

This compounding effect in vote counting is precisely an idea from @dantheman, so now he is gone, maybe this will be fixed. Nearly all the things wrong with the architecture of Steem (and most are already now fixed) were his ideas. There is more revelations coming about what was going on behind the scenes soon, I hope that this airing of dirty laundry is going to leave our house clean and become more inviting for new people to come in and join the party!

We gotta stay positive hey. Interesting to hear that these ideas were Dan's. Perhaps as you say, now that he is gone things will change.

Whilst I was aware that Steem Power relates directly to curation rewards, I had never stopped to think about how this is so evidently a problem. It makes no sense at all that people can simply buy their way in to a whale status.

Thank you for sharing this thought with me. Better times ahead for all of us :)

Love the idea! I'm definitely going to do something like this at your behest.
Thanks and praise. V

Appreciate the comment.
Thanks & praise right back at you :)

Cool, I like it!
