GET READY FOR THE FUTURE IT IS MURDER

Twenty millions ago the ancestors of both great and lesser apes, were forced by climate changes to leave the diminishing rain forests where they had been existing for the previous forty million years

The place where they found themselves was terra firma where they would be coexisting alongside gigantic predators, who spent a lot of time and effort trying to include great grand papa and mama ape onto their lunch menu.

During their forty million years of rain forest habitation these ancestral primates did not evolve very much because they were so perfectly adapted to their environment

The mechanism of evolution only comes in full swing when survival is threated. The new environment was certainly not conducive to the survival of a diminutive nocturnal ape that had been living in the trees for millions of years .Evolution guaranteed that certain changes were implemented.
Firstly it was no longer safe to move on all fours, standing up on two legs put our distant ancestors in a much better position to survey their surroundings and to ensure they could leave in a hurry when they needed to. I suspect that the urgency to make a quick departure happened more often than not .
Secondly standing on two legs freed their hands enabling them to grab a rock or lump of wood when they were required to crash a nasty flesh eating beast on the noggin. The first form of weaponry came into play

Thirdly they quickly discovered that a peaceful co-exisistance with the fellow members of their species was definitely to their advantage. In order to hunt for much larger prey and protect themselves from becoming prey they needed the help of a couple of connections.

What developed were basic social structures. Groups living together. To ensure that this social arrangement succeeded evolution provided certain emotional tools. One of these was empathy; the ability to share someone else’s feelings.

It took millions of years for these changes to come into play
The social tool of empathy being imperative for us co-existing in groups remained with us through all stages of evolution but the question I asked is are we more empathetic now than we were one hundred thousand years ago.

Before I offer an answer to that question I would like to discuss the members of our species who lack the ability to share someone else’s feelings .

Some these beings can be classified as bearers of a psychopathic personality disorder and others are sufferers of physiological ailments like autism and Asperger syndrome. While the behavior of psychopaths, may be learned, the diseased have a genetic impediment to empathy

For seventy centuries since the dawn of civilization ( the written history of mankind) the recorded actions of certain personages strongly indicate that they possessed pronounced psychopathic tendencies . Usually these were figures of authority .

The Roman empire was heavily infected , there was Nero , Caligula , Tiberius, and many others, after them came the rotten Roman catholic Popes , with the Borges taking first prize; the Spanish inquisition featuring the ruthless Fernando Álvarez de Toledo the third Duke of Alba; the actions of Henry the 8th certainly place him on the list; the South American Indians had Cortez the killer to contend with; the Russians had Ivan the terrible; I’m certain that psychopathy was prominent amid the late 18th century French aristocracy and amongst those who chopped off their heads; Bonaparte could certainly be a contender too.
A nineteenth century British army battalion operating under the leadership of Lord Kitchener took thirty minutes to slaughter fifteen thousand Dervishes in Sudan. At the completion of the exercise Kitchener asked the following question
“ what’s for lunch “
The twentieth century was a time of unprecedented ingenuity and genius.
In a very small time frame we moved from the Wright Brothers to landing on the moon; from the single shot musket rifle to a machine gun that can shoot a million bullets a minute , from the cannon ball to the neutron bomb, from the 1918 influenza epidemic with a death toll of twenty million to the cure consisting of a flu shot, a course of antibiotics and a day in bed
The twentieth century was also the time of Hitler, Himmler, Eichmann, Mengele, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot, Amin , Mussolini, Pinochet, Franco,Papa Doc, Bin Ladin, Verwoed, the Klu Klux clan, Peron, Leopold II, Tojo ,Pasha ,Kim Ilsung, Mariam, Kambanda, Hussein, Tito, Sukarno , Mullah Omar ,Yahya Khan , Sese Seko
Taylor, Sankoh ,Bokassa ,Montt, Trujillo,Habre ,Castro,Khomeini,
Mugabe, Videla , Ho Chi Minh ,Micombero, Alturab
This group of forty one psychopaths were responsible for the cold blood murder of 180 million human beings
The twentieth century contained more of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man than any of the preceding 69 centuries.

The psychopath probably existed in pre-historic times too but I believe that he was less prominent in those early social structures because in order to survive he needed to live in a group therefore his empathy levels needed to be highly tuned. I think it’s important to have a strong emotional perception of your cohabiter’s feelings in order in order to successfully live together in a close knit community.
I believe that the evolution of our species has brought with it a corrosion of our empathy levels caused by the fact that our survival no longer depends on our living in groups as much it did in prehistoric times. The history of the twentieth century is proof of this.
This corrosion of empathy has brought with it the age of the psychopath. The twentieth century was just a taste of what’s still to come, the likes of Stalin and Moa Tse Tung have already emerged only this time they are not military dictators , but they are business men.
Songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen wrote a song called the future which contains the following lyrics

Give me crack and anal sex
Take the only tree that's left
and stuff it up the hole
in your culture
Give me back the Berlin wall
give me Stalin and St Paul
I've seen the future, brother:
it is murder.

Your servant here, he has been told
to say it clear, to say it cold:
It's over, it ain't going
any further
And now the wheels of heaven stop
you feel the devil's riding crop
Get ready for the future:
it is murder

That's a great point you make: empathy is a survival skill. Totally agree.

@geke I'm happy you do. Thanks for stopping by. My August visitor

are we more empathetic now than we were one hundred thousand years ago?

I dont think so, we are after our own feelings these days, people are killing anyone these days. We are cold-blooded, no emotions which we need to work on

Did you use the word WE? Its good you express how you only feel and allow me too.

Thanks for drawing my attention back. Nicely done
