'Beca' Trishaw Ride in Malacca Malaysia ~ A Traditional Culture Ride
Would you try riding a trishaw? Here in Malaysia, the trishaw is called 'Beca', it was basically a bicycle ride so you would be enjoying the slow and steady ride while listening to 'Abang Beca' telling the stories about the city, the culture. I guess then the feeling that you have tried this traditional ride at least once in your life is priceless. So where actually can you ride this if you are in Malaysia? I only know that there were some trishaw riders in the city of Malacca Malaysia. Malacca State is located in southwestern of Malaysia. At its town center, the famous Jonker Street, Chinatown is known for its night market. To reach this place in Malacca, I have to travel around 160km from home.
'Abang Beca' in Malay which translated to 'Beca Brother' can be found in the Jonker street in the evening time where you could see all these Becas that were decorated beautifully with colorful lights. They were so strikingly attractive and each comes with their own happy music that was coordinated to sync with their blinking colorful lights. Each ride now is tourist-driven, so they charge based on an hourly rate. The cost is RM40 per hour per trishaw that can seat 2 persons. An enjoyable ride that felt like strolling around town together with the other Becas, colorful Becas' parade bringing the night to life in this part of town.
In our culture, this Beca is sung famously through this evergreen Malay song called 'Abang Beca' which means 'Beca Brother'. Telling you a story about Beca in Malaysia would not be completed without also singing this song. It is a simple and happy song if you would like to try and sing this :D
Abang Beca
Abang Beca Abang Beca di tengah jalan
Cari muatan untuk mencari makan
Putar-putar putar-putar kaki mengayuh
Pergi jauh keringat pun lalu jatuh
Dari pagi hingga matahari terbenam
Barat Timur Selatan serta Utara
Hujan panas tiada merintanginya
