Term: Impasto
Definition: A thick, juicy, or lumpy
and multi-layered application of paint to canvas or other ground support. The emphasis is on texture and obvious paint strokes, as distinguished from a smooth, flat surface. Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh was noted for his Impasto technique. American artists that used Impasto include Joan Brown, Frank Duveneck, David Park, and Nicolai Fechin.
