The Beginning Of The License Plate Guitar Part 2
Tonight I attempted to continue on the license plate guitar build. When I got out to the garage i was met by this:
So I tried for a half hour to get the heater working. The guy I got it from swore it was working fine. But it kept shutting down. But after about a half hour I got this.....
So the first thing I did was to clean up the neck pocket so it slid in without binding.
Now that it fit the slot good I needed to square the neck and drill some mounting holes for the neck
The neck is not perfectly aligned with the center stripe but I have a plan to make this not as noticeable....
While the neck is still roughly mounted I need to mark where I want to mount the pickup. Remember I am mounting this pickup under the license plate top so the plate is not cut up. This works fine as long as the distance between the pickup and the strings does not exceed 1/2 inch.
Now I need to position and glue cleats to screw the plate to the box using original license plate mounting holes. The will probably be some #4 screws around the perimeter based on How the plate sits on the box. This plate is slightly bent so its most likely going to go that route...
Now I take the neck back out and get ready to cut the slot for the pickup. After it has been marked and the depth of the cut decided on it gets a rough out with a forstner bit on the drill press.
Now it gets put in the vise and I bring out the router with a 3/8 bit and clean up the slot and make the depth where its supposed to be.
How's everyone like that older than dirt router......that baby will be working long after some of these new ones on the market now...
Set the pickup in and see how it fits....
Now I put everything down and turn out the lights because that heater just ain't keepin up. Part 3 soon. Depends on that dang heater......lol

very interesting and detailed :) I like the idea of putting the pick-up under the license plate! I've been putting piezos under the bridge of my oilcan guitars or just didn't put any pickups at all recently.
I've only ever used a regular pickup once on an oilcan guitar I made a few years ago and decided not too do it again because a) it didn't sound as nice when just played acoustically due to cutting into the top b) the pickup was in the way of my picking hand and c) I didn't get the oilcan sound that I was looking for, it sounded just like a regular electronic guitar when amplified
I might try to put a pickup under the oilcan in future though, thats a cool idea!
Question: Does the metal not interfere with the pickup in some way? Have to admit, my knowledge in woodworking is definitely stronger than in wiring, pickups & electronic stuff :P

this will be my first using the license plate but I'm hoping that the plate does not interfere. I think ity will be ok. I too usually use a piezo on these but the guy its for is a rocker and he will love it just for the plate. Here are a few examples of my resonators.... the brown License plate guitar has a piezo in it...

That's the Minnesota winter for ya! Gotta make sure that damn heater stays working...
