Wednesday Walk-Yard Work

in #wednesdaywalk5 years ago (edited)

This is in response to a Challenge by @tattoodjay to take photographs of things on a walk. Things you don’t normally see. I really like the challenge and the challenger so here I am again. This is also my first post done 100% at #Palnet. Normally I use HackMD to compose and edit in, but this was done right in the box on the site.

This is more about the yards behind the mailboxes. Once again, these are all taken in our neighborhood on our daily foray to the desert. There is a lot of 'diversity' in yards around here.

Whole Yard Sculpture.JPG

Some yards are incredibly detailed and precise. A place for everything and everything in it's place. Even if you don't know what the things are or where else they might go!

Gila Trickle RRx.JPG

Some are pretty specific social commentary: The Gila River confluence with the Colorado is just outside Yuma proper. There is no river, the entire Gila has been diverted for irrigation and the result isn't even really a trickle. This guy named his RV shed in it's honor :)

DeadFicusx.JPG

Sometimes, you just use what you have. A dead ironwood and a dead Saguaro make a pretty impressive yard decoration. That collection of Saguaro bones has to be permitted just as if it were a living Cactus. It is just simply illegal to own a Saguaro without a permit. And yes, the state enforces that with a vengeance!

Dead Palms.JPG

These people obviously cut down a pair of palms for what ever reason. Instead of pulling the stumps, they had an artist come in and surface sculpt and dye Kokopelli on them. A pretty impressive display!

DeadFicus.JPG

Tired of your Ficus tree blocking your view? There is a solution. Trim it to bare, paint it white and hang a couple of bird feeders on the carcass. No problem.

LemingLot1x.JPG

This is one of our favorite places on the way. Sam particularly likes it because they have dog cookies to bribe the doggies from pooping in the yard. I particularly like it because he is a rider and she is ALWAYS changing the yard. I mean, every week or 10 days something new happens here.

LemingLot2x.JPG

The horse is probably the newest item, it's been there about a month. It started out as a brown and white paint, but within a week it was a black and white paint. You can't see the donkey that also got repainted, is now a black and white pinto... This place makes me giggle twice a day.

GorgeousGeorgex.JPG

I'm not sure how this palm tree got it's shape, and whether or not it was intentional, but there is a surprise here that makes this my favorite of the whole bunch. Check out the next picture to see what I mean.

Yep. It's Curious George hanging from the Palm Tree.

This wraps up a pretty fun #WednesdayWalk. It's just yards, and just in my really little neighborhood. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I have!

This is hilarious @bigtom13, really made me giggle as well! That gal really loves decorating her house doesn't she, repainted the horse 3 times now? lol wow! Glad people are having fun with it. I didn't know the Saguaro had to be permitted, really protected which is good to hear. Great wednesday walk my friend, enjoy the weekend!

Yeah. Those guys just have too much fun with their yard! There are some details I just can't show enough of. They have a little waterstructure with some goldfish. The stuff can be outlandish but fun. A toilet as a planter and like that.

The Saguaro is seriously protected in AZ. It takes 75 years or so for them to form the arms. They really need the protection. Their replacement rate is just incredibly slow.

Those are some pretty awesome yards. I don't know if I could handle not having grass though. I mean sure you don't have to mow this way, and I understand why there isn't any grass given the climate, but it still just seems really foreign and alien to me. :) That one yard is definitely interesting with all of the decorations!

Grass is not politically correct around here. It takes way too much water. Phoenix has a 'buy out' for your 'normal' yard program. Starting to see quite a little artificial turf... I'm seeing quite a few yards that have let their Bermuda grass die and just water their rye grass in the winter...

There are lots of people that rake their gravel weekly. Even a few 'power rakes' that are pulled by 4 wheelers :)

Wow, that is so crazy to me. Understandable, but crazy!

Well, you know, you just gotta love the desert! It has some of the most interesting landscape to make up for the lack of grass and vegetation.

Curious George is a prime example. How many people can get away with that one? These yards all have character and charm and yes! They truly garner attention as you are walking on by. How can you not?

Yuma is one of those special places that many military retirees wander to, with the Marine Corps Air Station there, and the fact that Yuma specializes in air-to-ground flying training for US and NATO forces, I am pretty sure the facilities are still of a good size. So, it makes for a great place to spend winters.

Thank you for sharing your walk with us! You have a most interesting neighborhood and I find it refreshing to see that yard on the run, one that changes the scenery on a regular basis. With all the walkers nowadays, it is fun to change up the scenery like that. I love that horse! :)

Thanks again and I hope you have a most wonderful Thursday!

Yuma is said to have more flagpoles per capita than anyplace in the country. It's not just Marines that retire here, lots of Navy and Army too.

MCAS Yuma is the largest base in Marine Air. Formerly home to the Western Harrier squadrons it's now the test bed for all FA 35s for all services. And there is a major desert training area here. The Army has Yuma Proving Ground which actually has more people in Alaska than Arizona. It's a big deal for weapons testing.

That horse was a surprise. They had to move some stuff around to get it in! It's a cool couple in a cool place.

I actually did not mean to infer only Marines retire there. I just know the Army and Marines have a presence there and it is almost the #1 place retirees talk about going to.

The weather in the winter has its perks! Lucky you! ;)

I love a truly patriotic place. As an aside, my neighborhood, which numbers about 300 has their share of flags. I know this because I walk the entire thing every day. Of course, it helps that everyone that I know of is either military, Secret Service, State Department, FBI, or Civil Service...and on and on... not that this makes them patriotic, but I will tell you something. It feels good to be surrounded by people who chose to be a part of making this country safe or working towards the goal.

I love your neighborhood and hope we get to go on more walks!

Looks like a cool area... thanks for sharing these with us!

It's a purely residential non incorporated area. The rules aren't as strict as it would be in side the city limits.

Wow the range of things in years you came across is pretty amazing and so interesting i love the riders yard so much to see and how cool it is always changing

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :)

It's full on summertime here (highs over 110F) so the population is way down, like less than half what it is on New Years Day. A lot of the small, decorative stuff is put away for the summer. I'll try to remember to document them this fall. Some pretty clever stuff...

That would be cool for a then and now post of some of the properties, when people are there and when away

WOW thats hot been inthe 70s here this week and lots of rain and clouds Thunderstorms coming in soon for today and tomorrow but the weekend we will hit 80s and Sunny so looking forward to that

Do you live out in the sticks? Its so deserted 😮

It's not the end of the earth, but you can see it from here :) Our population more than doubles in the winter time when we have some of the best weather on earth. Then it's not so deserted. Or so pleasant for that matter....
