Wednesday Walk Flora Two

in #wednesdaywalk7 years ago

This is in response to a Challenge by @tattoodjay to take photographs of things on a walk. Things you don’t normally see. I really like the challenge and the challenger so here I am again.

Even though we are having our coldest weather of the season we are starting to see flowers blooming on the desert.

Sam and I went for a walk off north of here a ways, in some heavily channeled ground. It was hard going, we only made 5000 steps, but saw some cool flowers.

Chamomile Wide.JPG

This is Chamomile. What your tea is made from! Sweet Dreams. My Grandmother had another name for it, she used it in herbal remedies. She planted it and tended it in her garden when she was a newlywed. When I grew up on that farm it had gone wild and we had it everyplace.

Chamomile Detail.JPG

We had just started our walk, this was right on the edge of the big wash we had to cross to get to less civilized spaces.

Sam Helps.JPG

Sam, as always was very helpful in searching for new stuff. He even waited more or less patiently while I took photographs. I ended up taking over 70 photos on this walk, so he had a lot of chances to practice patience.

Orange Daisy.JPG

We came on this beautiful orange daisy. It's the only one I've seen this year, I really have no idea if it is a native or spread from someone's garden, but it was a nice little surprise.

Sage.JPG

Yellow Sage. It's related to the spice, but not exactly it. It's quite aromatic and I'm guessing it would do in a pinch in the kitchen.

Sage2.JPG

It's a sort of a brushy shrub, and the leaves are really a different shade of green, tending toward grey. It is a rather attractive plant when it's in bloom.

Desert Malo.JPG

This was the treat of the day for me. Desert Mallow, a relative of the Holly Hock. It's relatively rare here, and a pleasure to find a nice healthy plant.

Little Flowers.JPG

It's hard to see, I realize, but the foreground of this photo is just full of little bitty starts of plants. These little creatures will be grown and blooming in about 3 weeks, I'll try to bring a picture to you then!

So that's it. My #Wednesdaywalk. I hope you enjoyed seeing a little different corner of the desert as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.

There is nothing like some fresh air and a nice walk in good company. As soon I have my own place and stay in one place for a longer period of time I am getting myself a dog to keep me company. :)

Thanks for sharing your walk with us. Have an amazing day, my friend. :)

Sam and I get out most every day. When the weather is hot (and it does get hot here) we try to hit the desert just before sun up. Now days we wait til mid day.

I just love having Sam around. He's a funny dog, but good for me...

Hey, I have not met a dog jet who pretends to love... I wish sometimes humans would learn of what is pure unconditional love "animals" give to their "owners" every single day. :)

Dogs sure are great companions to have in your life. And, I will have one in the future no doubt in my mind. :)

Wow, that is really impressive. It is hard to believe that life can thrive in an environment such as that, but it seems to hold on to what little nutrients it can and persevere. I think there are some good life lessons to be learned from plants in the desert. Thanks for sharing!

The desert plants are just really expert at moisture management. The shrubs and trees have incredibly long roots and the annual plants really come on in a hurry. The Ajo Lillies that I showed blooming last week are already just about gone. I mean the vegetation and everything.

Wow, that is crazy! I really like the pictures of the chamomile you have here.

Love the cactus and desert plants @bigtom13. We just had a surprise bloom from a cactus we have on our back lanai. Totally unexpected and so sweet. The desert daisys are sweet, amazing how resilient they are with so little rain. One good rain shower goes a long way with them. So Sam was patient, he knew you needed to get your shots for Steemit, lol!

The desert plants are really expert at moisture use. It amazes me every year how much stuff we have blooming and growing. We get less than 3 inches of rain per year around here....

Cactus blooms are always so fun. Typically they don't last long...

You came across so me cool and colorful plants such the resilience of nature growing in fairly harsh terrain

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk !tip

It always amazes me the variety of colors. For plants that spend most of the year real bleached out or not visible at all the flowers are just unexpected.

This was a pretty cool walk. There is more to come from it!

Cool I look forward to seeing more of the walk :)

Wow, what a cool collection of wild herbs just growing there! Did you collect any?

I didn't collect any on this trip. I have a pretty good supply of both, actually. There are a couple of patches of white sage in the area, generally speaking if I need sage I go there...

Thanks for stopping by!

Very cool, what a neat resource! And you dont even have to weed or water it. :D

The orange flower is an 'African Daisy' it loves desert conditions. I'm not sure if it's native but I think it's often used in those 'wildflower' seed mixes sold commercially so it's probably a native now :)

As soon as I saw the first flower photo I said outloud 'Chamomile' as, of course, I grow it in my little 'tea garden' with things like bergamont (bee balm) and various mints and even cinnamon basil last year (I love cinnamon flavours in tea).

I just realized I'm not too late to do a #wendesdaywalk post, but first I've got to finish my coffee, get out of bed and work on my art first. By the time I do that I forget about other posts, But maybe I'll try to remember to include a pic of my walk today.

What is interesting about these type of desert flowers is we have similar ones here on the Ocean because they need to grow in Hot Dry sand even though they are steps from the sea. I grow a lot of mediteranean things as well, as they like to be hot and dry and with our warm salt filled windy Summers, any water loving plants have to be in a sheltered garden here and watered more often. What we gardeners do to recreate our little false environments. :)

You are never too late to do a Wednesday Walk! I've often done them on Thursday and Friday!

That's nice to know, African Daisy. I knew the daisy part :) Thank you.

Seaside and desert plants are often the same or very similar. The strip of land just onshore isn't a particularly beneficial zone for most plants...

My Grandmother's word was probably a German version. I know that she loved them and worked hard to get them established.

Sam is just a pretty cool dog. Sometimes he is right beside me, sometimes he's 100 yards away. Incredibly curious animal.
