What to do on a Rainy Day in Iceland | Beer Vlog #2
Hi guys! I am back to Iceland where I will spend the next few weeks working remotely. Yay! Unfortunately, the weather has not been favorable this weekend, so I decided to go grab a beer and work on my second Beer Vlog. First off, let me give you some context because this video is much shorter and without voice-over.
Alcohol in Iceland is sold in state-run liquor shops that are normally open from Monday to Saturday until 6 PM, which means that you should plan your shopping in advance if you'd like to have a drink after a hard day at work. The alternative is to visit a bar where prices are from 3 to 4 times higher compared to the store. Alcohol is also expensive in the liquor shops - the cheapest Pilsner (Albani Odense 330 ml) costs about $2.
The beer that I drank in the video was an Arctic Blueberry Ale by Einstök Beer Company. It tasted like a Pilsner infused with Blueberries. Nice but nothing spectacular.

its the same over here in Canada maks me drink way less beer. but the liquor store is always open just the hassle to go there. :)
Haha, I guess such weather is not totally unfamiliar to you :) The strongest beer you can get in the supermarket is 2.25% :) It costs $1 and tastes very watery. How much does a normal beer cost in Canada?

Lol, please don't! Do you have those mainstream american beers in Canada? When I lived in the USA some 10 years ago, I used to drink Old Milwaukee (or was it something else with Milwaukee in the name?), which tasted like piss 😁
hhaha yes Old Milwaukee a haven't seen it here but my burning man camp had like 1000 cans of it am not kidding. dont now if u now of burning man. but its gifting economy "festival" there and my camp had a piano bar and a shit ton of Old Milwaukee :) and yes the are bad...

You definitely have to have motivation there to drink. Yeah, in the state liquor store in Utah, you can take singles out of a six pak. The usual liquor store here in California you can not take separates out a six pak. And I wonder who orders the alcohol for those state stores - some guy at a desk who really likes merlot and has not had a beer in twenty years?

Haha, there's a big chance motivation will be close to non-existent during wintertime. Funny thing, I also wondered today who orders the alcohol in these stores :) And then I thought that I could probably do a much better job 😁 By the way, the beer that you got form the liquor store in Utah looked quite decent?

I think we should set up a company that advises these state controlled liquor stores. We should insist on tasting all of them ourselves so we guarantee quality. How many countries would that be? And some of those countries would really seem to appreciate/need some good beer. We could do it! Think of all the photos! :-)) Prost!!

Haha—nice! Back in Iceland sounds fun, rain or no rain. Any idea why alcohol is so tightly controlled, there? It seems odd. Better luck with beer #2! I've only ever found one blueberry be that was stellar...

I can't tell you for sure, but if I have to guess, I'd go with what @agniese told me yesterday - people probably used to drink a lot before they decided to regulate the sales. Another amazing fact is that beer was banned in Iceland until 1989. I am yet to read why :)

Yeah, that was funny! It fell down 3 times actually, lol :) I don't know how it was 2 years ago, but things (weather-wise) have gotten worse since my last visit in April :D
Nicely done, a cool little video, literally... Brrrrr, I cold just watching it... It looks like the expedition into the weather was rewarded with some tasty brews though, so all good :o) That's nuts about how expensive beers are in the pubs. I was in Sweden a few times for work, and it is the same thing there as well, crazy expensive in the pubs!
Haha, thank you so much! I guess Sweden is nothing compared to Iceland where a 8-9 Euro beer is considered relatively cheap 😁 How much would you pay for a pint in Ireland?
In Stockholm, it was anywhere from €6.50 to €9 for a pint... Pretty steep... Singapore is another place I visited where beer was very expensive!! In Ireland it varies quite a bit depending on where in Ireland you are.. anywhere from €4 to €7, but usually around a fiver... But if you drink craft beers, it can be a bit more expensive depending on your taste... There are certain bars in Dublin that up their prices the later it gets, and other bars that up the price on match days... They really know how to wring every last euro out of you!

Beer in Sofia is very affordable, considering you have a decent income - €3 to €5 can buy you a very good craft brew. There are many people from UK that visit the city for a weekend; I heard they call it alcohol tourism.
That's sweet... I love going to Spain for my holidays, beer is very cheap there, but not many decent craft beers, just all the generic ones.. I did find a nice dutch bar in the village we go to that sells some decent international beers like Leffe, etc... so we go there quite a bit..
