ULOG: 7 I take care of a really old swimming pool.
I wear several hats where I work.
- Water Plant operator
- Wastewater Plant operator
- Swimming pool guy
I take care of of a swimming pool built by one of those Depression Programs in the 30's.
- I test the water and add chemicals as needed.
- Chlorine gas is added to help disinfect.
- Soda Ash is added to keep the pH around 7.0.
- Chlorine gas is added to help disinfect.

This is where we inject the chlorine gas and soda ash into the water.
First it passes through a sand filter...
Backwash water building.
About twice a year we have to backwash the filter.
We fill that building up top and let it run backwards through the sand filter out onto the ground.

At least twice a day, I have to check on the pool...
6 hours of overtime today, since the highschool got new sod for their new football field and are using LOTS of water. My water tower still isn't full, but it's full enough and I'm headed home.

Sorry to say this, but those buildings look like they're ready for a makeover. :) I guess it doesn't matter what they look like as long as they function properly.
Now, football, so I'm told, is very important for the morale for those who play it, so I'm sure the water going to the new field will pay off dividends in hard working dedicated student athletes who will get a chance to excel in the game, in the classroom, and in life.
Or something to that effect. :)
The swimming pool loses money every year. It should be shut down, but no councilman or Mayor wants to be the one to do that. haha The school has a nice indoor, heated pool anyone can use for a similar fee that we charge. They would be willing to open one wall with sliding doors, so people could sunbath and such in good weather. 30 miles and that town has a couple million dollar pool. A lot of families with kids have their own pool... The city superintendent is looking at grants, but he has no idea what he's doing. A bond issue probably wouldn't pass, cuz they just passed a $5 million bond for the school to upgrade, among other things, the football field and stadium. It would be at least $500k and probably over $1M to replace this pool. With work, a 50/50 grant could be found. We're a town of about 1100.
It was good timing for the bond issue, the football team made the State semi-finals last year. Anyway, without a football field where would the marching band march?
Schools around here don't seem to find it that hard to float a bond every so often. Some of them manage to try it before the old bond expires, just so they can keep it going. Unfortunately, they never seem to get enough to keep ahead of the game. There hasn't been any new construction since we've been here (22 years) at the schools my sons attended, but they keep needing to upgrade the existing facilities' infrastructure, etc. So, our property taxes keep going up. Ours has gone up nearly 150% since we moved here 13 years ago mainly because of school bonds, both public and the local community college. Then, of course, the fire department wants to get in on the action, too. City's been quiet. I wonder what they're up to. Our town is somewhere in that same amount of people. Maybe more now, since they started building again about two years ago.
Most people here don't have in ground pools, but they might have the larger above ground ones, or kiddie pools. There are some outdoor ones around, too, with ones like the YMCA in doors. The high school my sons went to doesn't have any kind of pool, but they do manage to field a swim team. They just never really have a home meet.
It's too bad that things have to keep operating at a loss. I guess it must not be so bad that it's sucking the life out of the rest of the budget. Otherwise, it could become a sticky issue right quick.
