National Palace Museum in Taipei // Nationales Palastmuseum in Taipeh
Treasury of Chinese Culture. The world's largest and most valuable collection of Chinese artworks can be found not in China, but in Taiwan. The National Palace Museum in the north of Taipei has around 700,000 finds and artifacts, only a fraction of which are on display. The collection encompasses cultural objects from 7,000 years of Chinese art.

Das Nationale Palastmuseum im Norden von Taipeh ist im Besitz von rund 700.000 Funden und Artefakten, wovon nur ein Bruchteil ausgestellt ist. Die Sammlung umfasst Kulturobjekte aus 7.000 Jahren chinesischer Kunst.
Short historical reviewThe unique collection of art treasures is a legacy of the four imperial dynasties Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing. After the revolution in 1911 and the banishment of the last emperor Puyi from the Forbidden City, the imperial palace in Beijing was rededicated as the National Palace Museum in 1925. During the Japanese invasion in Manchuria, the art collection was brought to a warehouse in Shanghai. During the civil war in 1949, the nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan with his army and followers before the communists. Even the most valuable part of the collection was evacuated to the island in the Pacific.
Kurzer geschichtlicher RückblickDer einzigartige Bestand an Kunstschätzen ist ein Erbe der vier Kaiserdynastien Song, Yuan, Ming und Qing. Nach der Revolution im Jahr 1911 und der Verbannung des letzten Kaisers Puyi aus der Verbotenen Stadt erfolgte 1925 die Umwidmung des Kaiserpalastes in Peking zum Nationalen Palastmuseum. Während der japanischen Invasion in die Mandschurei wurde die Kunstsammlung in ein Lagerhaus in Shanghai verfrachtet. Als 1949 der Nationalistenführer Chiang Kai-shek im Bürgerkrieg mit Anhängern und Armee vor den Kommunisten nach Taiwan floh, wurde auch der wertvollste Teil der Sammlung auf die Insel im Pazifik evakuiert.
In November 1965 the National Palace Museum of the Republic of China was opened in Taipei. The exhibits are displayed on three floors. Artworks made of jade, bronze, porcelain and wood as well as early historical finds and artefacts are the main focus of the permanent exhibition. Due to the sensitive materials, books, paintings, calligraphies or documents in special exhibitions are only shown for a limited time.
Im November 1965 wurde das Nationale Palastmuseum der Republik China in Taipeh eröffnet. Die Exponate verteilen sich auf drei Etagen. Kunstwerke aus Jade, Bronze, Porzellan und Holz sowie frühgeschichtliche Funde und Artefakte bilden den Schwerpunkt der Dauerausstellung. Aufgrund der empfindlichen Materialien werden Bücher, Gemälde, Kalligrafien oder Dokumente in Sonderausstellungen nur zeitlich begrenzt gezeigt.

Jadekohl und FleischsteinLange Besucherschlangen bilden sich vor den Vitrinen zweier Schaustücke, die kunstvoll aus Schmucksteinen geschnitzt sind.
Two well camouflaged locusts sit on a piece of jade carved in the shape of a cabbage head. The partly transparent leaves result from the different natural colours of the jade and reproduce the colour nuances of a real cabbage in a very realistic way.
Auf einem Stück Jade, das in Form eines Kohlkopfes geschnitzt ist, sitzen, gut getarnt, zwei Heuschrecken. Die zum Teil transparenten Blätter ergeben sich aus den verschiedenen Naturfarben der Jade und bilden die Farbnuancen eines echten Kohls täuschend echt nach.
With the meat stone, the natural colour spectrum of an agate-jasper was used to imitate a piece of meat. The coloured and textured surface makes the skin layer, lean meat and fat appear almost real.
Beim Fleischstein wurde das natürliche Farbspektrum eines Achatjaspis genutzt, um ein Stück Fleisch nachzubilden. Die gefärbte und strukturierte Oberfläche lässt die Hautschicht, mageres Fleisch und Fett beinahe echt erscheinen.
Together with the Jadeite cabbage and the meat-shaped stone the bronze vessel Mao Gong ding is one of the "Three Treasures of the National Palace Museum". On the inside the tripod vessel has a inscription with 500-characters. So it is the longest antique calligraphy on bronze worldwide.
Das bronzene Speiseopfergefäß Mao Gong ding zählt mit dem Jadekohl und dem Fleischstein zu den "Drei Schätzen des Nationalen Palastmuseums". Der dreifüßige Behälter ist innen mit einer 500 Zeichen umfassenden Inschrift versehen. Es handelt sich dabei weltweit um die längste antike Kalligrafie auf Bronze.
The exhibitions on the second floor of the museum show the history of Chinese ceramics.
Im zweiten Stock des Museums wird die Geschichte der chinesischen Keramik erzählt.
Interactive exhibitions show old techniques of painting and open up the world of calligraphy to the visitor.
Interaktive Ausstellungen führen in alte Techniken der Malerei ein und erschließen dem Besucher die Welt der Kalligrafie.
The exhibition "Compassion and Wisdom" shows Buddhist sculptures from different eras.
Die Ausstellung "Mitgefühl und Weisheit" zeigt buddhistische Skulpturen aus unterschiedlichen Epochen.
Rare books and secret archives provide an insight into the life, culture and religions of the native Taiwanese people in the 18th and 18th centuries.
Seltene Bücher und geheime Archive gewähren einen Einblick in das Leben, die Kultur und die Religionen der Ureinwohner Taiwans im 18. und 18. Jahrhundert.
After visiting the museum I recommend a walk through the Zhishan Garden, which was planned according to the principles of Feng Shui..
Nach dem Museumsbesuch empfiehlt sich ein Spaziergang durch den Zhishan Garten, der nach den Prinzipien des Feng Shui angelegt wurde.
Und das zurecht! Auch ich finde den Jadekohl und den Fleischstein beeindruckend.

Die beiden Skulpturen haben in diesem Museum einen ähnlichen Stellenwert wie die Mona Lisa im Louvre.
Ich finde es faszinierend, wie perfekt die unterschiedliche Färbung der Steine beim Schnitzen dieser täuschend echten Nachbildungen ausgenutzt wurde.
Die Heuschrecken auf dem Jadekohl sind gut getarnt und auch auf dem Original schwer zu erkennen.

Hallo Anna,
da muss ich natürlich unbedingt hin. In der Schlange zu stehen, um einen Chinakohl zu bewundern, muss wahrhaftig ein Erlebnis der besonderen Art sein. Vorher mache ich jedoch einen Testausflug zu EDEKA in die Gemüseabteilung.

Sehr schöner Artikel mit vielen tollen Fotos. Wann warst du in Taiwan. Wo ich gerne mal hin will ist Japan.
Ich war im Oktober letzten Jahres für 3 Wochen in Taiwan. Japan ist landschaftlich und kulturell gesehen sicher auch ein tolles Reiseziel.
It's so lucky that the Nationalists bought so many artifacts over with them otherwise most might have been likely to be destroyed during the cultural revolution.
It's terrible how many victims the cultural revolution in China has claimed. You're right, many chinese art treasures were saved from total destruction by bringing them to Taiwan 20 years ago.
