Creation of Beach of the Dead & Gri Gri Lagoon. (PART 2)

in #travel7 years ago

Playa Los Muertos, Rio San Juan, Dominican Republic.

Located on the north side of the Island, Beach of the dead (Playa de los Muertos ).
Apparently there are a few other beaches called the same in different parts of the world, like Mexico, Spain and other places, I actually learned about this today, but for now I will write about this beach in The Dominican Republic.

Before, it was just a cemetery on the beach since the 1800's in an era where beaches on the island had little to no tourist importance for the country, It was also a normal practice to use beaches as cemetery.
It was a cemetery until a combination of earthquake & tsunami hit the area on 1958 that lead to the changes on the coast around Rio San Juan, creating the now called Gri-Gri Lagoon covered on my PART1 of this story and completely covered the cemetery with sand making it just a beach where very few people visit or bathe in it.
The beach it self is almost a virgin beach due to the taboo of the sand covered cemetery that still has a few tombstone sticking out, some even dating as early as 1956.

Another reason why its not a popular site is because very few people outside of the town know about this place and the locals still respect it as the cemetery that it was,
there are two ways to get there witch is via boat, through Gri-Gri Lagoon or via a private property near Beach of the guards (Playa de los Guardias) where there is a quite large swamp with manglers that really give it a foul smell do to the stuck waters and birds living there, now add the smell and the thought of dead and it really gets to you. :-)
Once you reach the beach the smell is gone and the view is priceless.

Put aside the cemetery part and as you get there, the beach is very nice and peaceful with beautiful clear waters, but not suitable for children since it has constant waves that make it difficult for them to play.

I left some pictures of the beach and entrance bellow and soon I will wright about the other beaches I visited afterwards.

NOTE: The owners of the property allows visitor to cross to the beach without any issues.

These are a few shots I took of the journey from both entrances of beach and the beach it self.

I hope you guys like it.
