Safety First

When walking through this world we must be careful. We must look with our own eyes.
I like a country that expects you to take responsibility for your own self.
Welecome to Guatemala... where actual docks that humans have to board from... look like this.

We don't normally return to the city via this side of the lake. It's nearly Christmas... it's one of our bigger re-stocks of the year... So why are we returning via the wrong side of the lake?

image

Well... take a look at this past post that describes the road that normally seperates the Hostel from the goods that keeps its visitors happy.

Well the reason we are taking this abnormal supply run via the lake is because of Guatemalan Planning Magic.

For years this deteriorating road complied to its deteriorated obligations.
Hi, I'm a shit road. Drive slow. ... most cars obliged out of the obvious taste of brake.

image

So after 7 years of a crap road.... leading to the 3rd most visited national attraction in Guatemala... the government finaly decides to fix it.
Nice... thanks GovIgnors...right before the busiest time of the year.... this government is literally announcing over the morning loudspeakers ----- as of tomorrow roads are 100% closed for repairs.----
Thanks for the notice Guate!!
And in classic fashion....The official closing dates of the only road this side of Lake Atitlan....were made known on the night of the 5th....
ROAD MANTENANCE .....6th to 28th, December 2017.

So how do you get a full shuttle worth of supplies back from the big city when the road is closed?? Answer--- Private boat from the other side of the lake.

image

It's a lot of extra lugging... but at least it's a nice day.
So here we are... after 2 solid days of shopping...shlepping boxes, bags and loading shuttles... we arrive home.
The crew and morning yoga classes await.

image

It's a lot of work providing for backpackers joy and comfort. Tasty beers and toilet paper...some salt for your lake side margarita.
This vacation bubble was brought to you by 2 days of lifting and leg work. Followed by a bonus boat ride. Thanks Guatemalan road services for teaching me a new way to get all this crap back.

image

This was my last run before leaving for vacation.
Now it is time for me and the Fam to get served.
Oh yeah... this Butt can't wait to be feet up and whistling for service.....only 3 days and counting!
Be careful everybody, better be polite.
4 years of fielding expectation... now my expectation is seeking an even Steven...all the while ... garçon can feed me grapes.

You might be fooling the others here, but you aren't fooling the old sultnpapper. This post is your clever way to show that you, el Presidente, have stroke with local power structure. No way is this a coincidence that you are leaving town for vacation and that the repairs will all be taking place while you are out of the country.
You get elected el presidente and the road just happens to be scheduled to be repaired, yea, right.... born at night Mr. Butt... just not last night.
Congratulations on moving the needle with the road department.
Enjoy the vacation,
@sultnpapper

Damn... busted! Nothing gets by you papper.

This looks like a fun little adventure, I'd like to try that life style once, figure out the differences. I have it way to good up in Canada, I will say that much!

yeah...it not to switch it up at times. it's never really about the place...it always more about the person withing that place. plenty of people can be miserable in paradise while others happy in slum poverty.
glad you got it good... i too feel blessed...even when my sarcasm or frustration comes through...behind it i am pretty satisfied

That pier in the first pic doesn't look to cleaver! I would still love to sit at the end of it in the evening though with a good book. Looks like a good quiet spot. Gr8 post as usual my friend. Keep writing them and I will most definitely keep reading them 📖

Haha I feel such a frustration in your writing about the entire thing, but hey, although tough, it seems like it has been quite an adventure and that' s always nice! Fantastic pictures, even seems it might have been fun. If we were there we would be in for helping you, I promise! :)
Enjoy the vacation and thank you for yet another amazing post! :)

It was frustrating... it was much more costly and difficult... I just had to keep reminding myself that in the long run it will be much better. But hard to see that when amidst the slog.

Its probably the worst road I have ever seen. Imagine you buy new car and have to ride it there :O

Come visit Latin America sometime!

Nice! I like your writing. You make me smile. The supplies seem helpful. 😉

It is very nice to write the article about the road and river of Guatemala. It is a praise for the whole.
