Our Last Day in Laos: Mekong River, Organic Market, and the Best Pad Thai EVER!!!

Our Last Day in Laos

As with all good things, they must come to an end. We've had a wonderful time in Vientiane, Laos and feel like we had enough time to really explore the city thoroughly and get a feel of the atmosphere and culture. On our last day here, we decided to take a stroll down to the Mekong River as well as walk the streets one last time to admire the architecture, monuments, and beautiful flora that surrounds this city.

Walk Through the City

After a short visit to the Mekong, we decided to walk through the city aimlessly to see what we would come across. It's fun to just be a "fly on the wall" watching life go by in a city you're unfamiliar with.

More wats! They're everywhere.

Walking along further we stumbled across an organic market. Every fruit and vegetable you could think of was sold here. We didn't buy anything but we admired the produce laid out on the tables and enjoyed watching the hustle and bustle of the market-goers.

Just across the street we found a nice little coffee shop. But instead of coffee, we've found a new love for Italian soda which is big here. It's not a surprise; these drinks are super refreshing on a hot, humid Lao day!

Best Pad Thai Ever!

Before catching our flight to Thailand, we needed to grab some food. We circled the block around our hotel looking for a nice spot to eat, but unfortunately it was around 3:30pm when most of the restaurants had closed for the afternoon. We've noticed that some countries in Asia are like Europe, where stores close in the afternoon and reopen around dinner time. I was worried we might not find anywhere to eat.

But there was one place still open! And it was a quaint little restaurant built out of the basement of a woman's home. She quickly invited us in (as if we were a guest in her home) and got us fixed up with some cold ginger ale. I opened up the menu and the first thing I saw was pad thai. I'll have that!!

Kristen got the green curry

There it is! Literally the BEST pad thai I've ever had. And I've had a LOT of pad thai over the years, mostly the American version with the sweet reddish orange sauce. I'm not sure what this woman did to bring out all the amazing flavors of garlic, peanut, and soy... but it was amazing!

Next stop, Bangkok

It's sort of sad to leave Laos so soon, but we have to get on to Bangkok for Kristen's appointment with the US Embassy. We'll have 5 days in Bangkok before leaving to Myanmar so this should give us some good time to rest up and explore Bangkok a little. We'll be coming back through here in a few days and will visit Phuket and the islands of Thailand. I'm REALLY looking forward to that!

Thanks for following along with our journey through SouthEast Asia. We look forward to sharing more very soon!

@brandonfrye your next stop would be very much interesting as Thailand is really a very good country to spent your time. i just love all the places there but one place i like the most is Jim Thompson House. i advice you to visit there if you get some time.

Ahh, we just learned about that yesterday. It's definitely on our list of places to see here. We're very interested in the silk production of Thailand. Yesterday we stopped by a manufacturing building and picked up a Thailand silk suit with silk lining, custom tailored for like $200! Incredible deal. :)

Hey @akkirocks, thanks again for your comment and following along with our journey. Each post I do I give a random upvote to somebody who left a comment and today is your lucky day! I'll be upvoting your comment above shortly. Thanks again and we hope to get to the Jim Thompson house before leaving!!

It was awesome. Just a little sad we had to leave so soon. :)

Looks like you enjoyed the Pad Thai, being the best you've ever had! Vientiane isn't bad at all, and I must say that their magnificent temples add to the beauty of the city. Safe trip to Bangkok!

OMG it was incredible! :) Thanks and we're really looking forward to exploring more of Bangkok. Lots more pics to come!

Looking forward to that!
