Travels With Connie #51 Lee's Ferry

in #travel6 years ago

Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.

More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.

Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.

Lee's Ferry

This wide spot in the road is like a sort of suburb of Lee's Ferry. Yes, there was actually a guy named Lee that ran a ferry across the river at the crossing. It's really the start of the Grand Canyon and the only viable place to cross the river for a long ways.

I have no idea who lived in this cabin, but somebody went to a lot of effort to live a pretty meager existance. It is in a pretty spectacular setting to be sure.

The cabin overlooks a formation cleverly called balancing rock.

It is a pretty amazing site, in fact the whole area is pretty darn amazing with the Vermilion Cliffs and Marble Canyon. Lee's Ferry is the very beginning of the Grand Canyon and Marble Canyon is the first named part of the GC. This is the spot where the rafts and boats put in the water for the trip down the Canyon.

Not Connie in Balance

You can see Marble Canyon rising up directly behind the bike and rock in this picture. You can also see by the length of the shadows and weird lighting that it's getting late in the day. We still had over 100 miles to go and the need to find a place to camp before serious dark. The good news is this was a weekend of a full moon that was incredibly close to earth so it didn't ever get entirely dark all weekend.

Owing to the time of day we didn't take the trip down to actual Lee's Ferry crossing, we pushed on for the North Rim. But I included these two photos to show the river and the start of Marble Canyon.

The next stop is a camping spot on the North Rim. Actually just outside the Park Boundry in the National Forest that allows 'dispersal' camping. Means you pick the spot...

I hope you'll continue the ride with me, there really is lots more to come.

The words in this post are all mine. The last two photos are posted through Wikimedia Commons, the rest are mine.

That cabin? My writing creativity is already churning ideas about it. Could it have been a trapper's place a century ago? Maybe a frontier family who traveled west?

Another great post!!

Don't you just really want to tell that story? The place is just so compelling standing there completely abandoned. Where did he get those timbers? The nearest trees are clear up on the rim, and that is a serious long way.

Thanks for a great comment. Let me know when you write the story. Maybe we should make it a challenge?

Those pictures are really looking good and cute. But I learnt that some spiritual being lives in the canyon over there, please how true is it? Well done @bigtom13. Safe trip all the same.

The local tribes all have spiritual ties to the Canyon. And in all honesty, my spiritual compass reacts there too.

Hahaha. That's a bit scary.

These photos from the Canyon are so awesome! That cabin is just like in the movies ;0)

It does look like a movie prop, doesn't it? I don't think it's ever been in one, but it certainly could be.

Thanks for stopping by.

I saw your post a day ago when I was already in bed and almost falling asleep... So I didn't comment but I was already impressed by the pictures and am quite sure I had a few dreams where they were incorporated :D I am SUCH a fan of places that sort of look 'un-earthy' and these shots do fall in that category for me. Amazing!

Your front wheel took you to the right place!

This is one of those places that is almost too intense. There is so much stuff. It's like a two year old watching their first fireworks. Have no idea where to look next, but everyplace is a 'Wow'.

Thanks for stopping by Soyrosa.

so beautiful! ive been to the opening of GC but dont remember that. :) lovely photography. funny becuase when i saw the name i thought of Dobbs Ferry in NY and theres a waterfall and its green. got misplaced for a sec. hehe

There is a lot of really cool geology right in that area. I'm going to try to go back this fall, there are some side canyons that are pretty accessible and will go right down to the river. I probably need to see them, and spend more time around Lee's Ferry.

@bigtom13 whoa, sounds awesome and i can't wait to see your posts on it.

Those rocks are amazing, can't believe you did it on motorcycle. The desert definitely has a beauty to be appreciated, stunning. Nice travels @bigtom13

The next installment will take us to thick timber and high country on the North Rim. The whole area is just a paradise.

Thanks for riding along.

this is so stunning. I always see scenes like these in the movies. I would totally visit the States just to go on a lonnng road trip with loads of camping under the stars

Wait until you see our camp site. There are quite literally millions of them that are 100% free on National Forest Land. The western US is just unbelievable in that way. I am boggled by it, and I grew up with it.

great work!!! I never saw this out west!! thanks much for sharing!! (and be safe).

It's not exactly on the way to anyplace except the start of the GC. Pretty darn remote, maybe 50 miles from Page.

Nice picture my friend...

Thank you. The pictures really come pretty easy when the scenery is right.

Beautiful scenery, excellent photo taking, beautiful pictures will result in maximum benefits.

I think the random rocks that have been shaped by the water look so cool. They look like they are so out of place and are standing tall when they should have fallen long ago. It is amazing what nature can create. There is a rock in Nova Scotia called Balancing Rock and it looks to be standing on its tip. Crazy when you see it in person. That last shot btw.. Stunning!!

Yeah, those rocks just fascinate me too. We seem to have more than our fair share in this part of the world.
