Hong Kong Island Culture Trip and Rooftop Sunset- Hong Kong [Day 7]
It's my final day in Hong Kong. Tomorrow I'm flying to Vietnam. I got very comfortable here in Vietnam. This makes it very hard to leave. I made local friends and travel friends. I had an amazing week and I was able to share something unique with all of you.
I feel a bit lazy today. I'm not in the mood to do something extreme. I got home very late last night, after that karaoke bar. I had a few beers and only hit the bed at 4 am. But there is one place I am keen to check out. It's called the monster building!
The monster building (Yik Cheong)
The 'Yik Cheong' is a massive residential complex. It is just surreal, you have to see it for yourself. It's just one massive block of small houses where the residents live. It's hard to imagine that a place like this even exists.
Here's a look inside one of the houses. As you can see, it is tiny. Living space is very scarce in Hong Kong. My bet is that they only have 1 small bedroom. On the ground floor of the complex are some small shops, restaurants and barbershops. These look very authentic.
Quarry Bay
We find our way to some indoor markets. These markets, just like the monster building, look so surreal. They are very authentic. This is a pure culture trip. Here's the entrance to one of the markets.
The market isn't that big. There are a lot of fruit stalls and fresh fish. Like really fresh as in alive fish. You can also find a lot vegetables here and also some more obscure things like mouse ears. Yes, mouse ears!
We also get a horrible view. They sell toads in this market. They are still alive. One person orders 4 of them. So the seller takes the toads, put them in a plastic bag like they are worthless. Next he takes them out one by one, lay them on the cutting board and chop off their heads! You could hear them squeak.
After this market we go further to the MTR station and pick a next stop we can visit. We eventually find ourselves in Chan Way Park. It's a very beautiful park next to the MTR station.
In this area we grab some food too. I think it was from a chain food restaurant. It was in the MTR station. It wasn't anything special. Just, meh.
Hong Kong University
After getting lunch we go back to the MTR. I notice that the HKU is on the same line as this one. My friend had been telling me that that area is nice and I should check it out. So that's what we did. We hopped on the MTR and got going.
The HKU is on the other end of this line. The MTR is really deep down here, or the HKU is very high up. We have to take an elevator to get to the University. The elevator goes up really fast and it's all high up. So our ears pop from the pressure change, like in an airplane.
As soon as we step out of the elevator we get greeted by this amazing view! Just wow! The University is super gorgeous. The surrounding nature is relaxing. On the backside of the HKU is a mountain. It has stairs and you can go hiking in here. This University is amazing.
We go on a little hike in this area and then make our way to Kennedy town. It's a nice area. There's a lot of up and downhills here. We also get into another indoor market. These markets are very interesting.
Here we get a minibus back to the Aberdeen area where I'm staying.
Sunset rooftop
It's my final night in Hong Kong. It was sunset time when I got back at the hostel. So I decided to get to the rooftop once more. This time to watch the amazing sunset. The view was just gorgeous! I got here at the right time. I chill here for a few minutes to appreciate the view.

Yeah, Hong Kong is crazy. There are a lot more crazy places in the world, like Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. I love to mix it up. I love the break in a calm place after being in such a busy place.

Looks like you had a great time. The views are amazing. I've seen the one building in several movies and I love the idea the shops are on the bottom floor, it makes it easier to get to especially with so many people. I could not live in it though...too close, too many ppl, not enough space. Anxiety and claustrophobia would kick into high gear.
