Photography #12 - Iceland in February...

in #travel6 years ago

This is a post that was inspired by @bibirider's recent post, and her words of encouragement afterwards.

Back in February I took a road trip around Iceland and started a few blog posts about it here, here and here

But then life took over and I didn't get to write about the rest of the journey, other than a few random photos which I'll link to below. So, while I have a few spare moments, I thought I'd get back to where I left off...Gullfoss...

One of Iceland's most beautiful and most popular waterfalls

This is by far the biggest waterfall I've ever seen and it took my breath away. At one time there was talk of harnessing it's power to generate electricity but it is now protected as part of Iceland's natural landscape. If you look carefully at the ledge on the left side of the photo, you can see a couple of people standing there - this should give you a sense of scale as to it's size!

After this brief stop, we headed West and North to Pingvellir...

The road to Pingvellir, a national park with an amazing story...

Pingvellir has enormous cultural significance in the history of Iceland - this was the site of the founding of the Althing, Iceland's national government, over 1000 years ago. It's also a World Heritage site and, I think, the only place where you can walk along the American and Eurasian tectonic plates (which make up the longest mountain range on Earth!).

Walking along the Mid-Atlantic ridge between two continental plates!

After this mind-blowing experience, we headed West to meet up with road 1 (the main road that circles the island)...

Lots of huge scree slopes along road 1 heading past Borganes, where we stopped for lunch

Driving road 1 through Nordurardalur. Ice flows on the Nordura river, Lava fields and an old volcano or two - Amazing drive!

Up in the North as the sun starts to set. Still a couple
hundred miles to Akureyri (our destination)

A much needed rest at the end of a long but wonderful day

So this was day 1: Hella>Golden circle>Akureyri. I've got a few more days to post about but I hope you've enjoyed it so far. Looking forward to hearing your comments.

Thanks for stopping by!
Adam.

Beautiful pictures. The waterfall is really huge. I haven't had the chance to see one that big before. The most I've seen are just those with few columns of water flowing down.
All your photos are amazing. Driving around while being able to see all those beautiful scenes must be quite an experience.

Thank You @ryunamist. It was an amazing experience. I'm not keen on driving but I was lucky enough to travel with a friend who loves driving - so he did all of that, while I got to do the thing I love, which is taking lots (LOTS!) of photos. I'm not exaggerating when I say there were hundreds of waterfalls all over Iceland - I'll post a few more as I progress through the posts. Thanks for your kind comments my friend :)

Amazing! I wish to visit Iceland someday, its a very different reality from mine - Brazil - a tropical country that almost have no winter, haha.

This was my first trip there and I definitely recommend it. I am planning to go back one day too, hopefully not too far from now :) Thanks for your support @rodrigozottis

Amazing, good luck on your trips!

Thank you my friend - you too!

Beautiful images. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks @rockykelley - Day 2 of my trip coming up soon :)
