Photography #5 - The face of the Great Geysir

in #photography6 years ago

As promised from my previous Iceland post, I am going to show you the Great Geysir!

Not only was it spectacular to witness first hand, with a marvellous sun rise, but I also managed to time the photo to somehow capture a face in the Geysir (not photoshopped!)!

This effect is know as pareidolia, our ability to see faces and other shapes in random patterns (the face on mars being a famous example). I'm so pleased with the result and hope you like it too!

Steam (not STEEM) after the eruption...

The Great Geysir is apparently the original geyser (from which all other erupting hot springs worldwide get their english name of 'geyser'), as the phenomenon was first to be described in printed form by modern Europeans here in this spot. The name stuck.

It erupts roughly every 8-10 minutes, or at least it did when we were there! This provides lots of opportunities to take extra photos if you happen to miss it the first time round. Also lots of time to find the right spot and set up your camera!

Again, get there early, it gets busy!

Next stop...Gullfoss waterfalls...

You were lucky to get such a wonderful shot. The day I went was very very windy, and bitter cold so that when it rose, it was blown to the side horizontally. I hung around for around 30 minutes for a good photo opportunity but it wasn't to be. ☹️

I agree, it was lucky indeed, but i find that sometimes photography has a big element of luck - being in the right spot at the right time etc. When i went to diamond beach in the south, for example, a storm front moved in as we got there and i couldn't get a single shot without getting rain on my lens. So frustrating lol

Thats cool. We have to one in Yellowstone National park calld Old Faithfull and the area looks a lot like your great geyser. Thanks for sharing!

I've heard of old faithful and would love to see it one day. This one is the first one i've been to and it was awesome. Glad you enjoyed the post and thank you for your upvote my friend :)

What a sight! This is the first time I've read about hot springs erupting. Does this only happen at a specific time in a year?

No its constant as far as i know, due to the volcanically active region it's in. As i understand, it will gradually decrease and fade as it moves away from the area or the volcanic activity dies down. There are a few places worldwide were this happens but it's the first one i've been to. Glad you like it and thanks for your support!

Youre very welcome! I find this really interesting and would love to witness the same in the future. I wanna research if this happens somewhere in the Philippines, too. Safe travels!
