The local gem safari #3 - Downtown Basel
Welcome to a new episode of the local gem safari ! In this series you can send me out to places of your choice and I will report back to you what I stumble upon!
Willkomen zu einer neuen Ausgabe der local gem safari! In dieser Serie könnt Ihr mich zu Orten Eurer Wahl schicken und ich werde berichten, auf was ich dort stosse.
This is how it works: At the end of this post you find the perimeter within which you can send me around once every week. Grab the coordinates or the name of the place of your interest from google maps and post it to the comments. You can either specify what you want me to capture at that location Or you simply leave it up to me to decide what I find worth reporting from there. The proposal with the most upvotes after the first payout will send me to the next destination and will be rewarded with 25% of the earnings of the resulting post.

Entnehmt Google maps die Koordinaten oder die Bezeichnung des Ortes der Euch interessiert, und postet diese als Kommentar. Ihr könnt angeben, was genau ich dort für Euch einfangen soll Oder Ihr überlasst es mir zu entscheiden, was ich von dort berichte. Der Vorschlag mit den meisten upvotes nach der ersten Auszahlung gibt das Ziel für die nächste Safari vor und wird mit 25% der Einnahmen des resultierenden Beitrages belohnt!

Founded in 1994 the Bird´s Eye Club in Basel has gained fame as being one of Europe´s most renowned locations to enjoy live jazz music. The club offers concerts of international and regional artists at five evenings each week during the main season at remarkably modest entrance fees.
1994 gegründet gilt der Basler Jazz Club Bird´s Eye mittlerweile als eine der Top-Adressen in Europa um Jazzmusik live zu geniessen. In der Hauptsaison finden im Bird´s Eye jede Woche fünf Konzerte von internationalen und regionalen Jazzgrössen statt. Und das zu erstaunlich moderaten Eintrittspreisen.
Unfortunately, when I arrived I had to learn that the club remained closed for the entire weekend due to another city-wide live music event (Klangbasel). So no chance for me to make it inside during the time-window that I had available for this weeks gem safari.
Leider stand ich bei Ankunft vor verschlossenen Türen und musste darüberhinaus dem Programm entnehmen, dass der Club wegen eines anderen, stadtweiten Live-Musikevents (Klangbasel) das ganze Wochenende über geschlossen bleiben würde. Daher bestand leider keine Chance für mich, während des Zeitfensters dieser Photosafari in den Club hineinkommen zu können.
Yet still, I can report one little gem back from there, which is the graffiti on the wall next to the club´s entrance. The message "Revolte heisst Leben / Revolt means life" reminded me of an earlier post of you, @shortcut, which lets me believe that you can relate with this slogan ;-)
Dennoch, eine kleine Perle habe ich direkt vor Ort gefunden, nämlich das Graffiti an der Wand neben dem Clubeingang. Aufgrund eines früheren Posts von Dir, shortcut, könnte ich mir vorstellen, dass Du diesem Slogan etwas abgewinnen kannst ;-)
Since there wasn´t much more that I could capture for you from the Bird´s eye, I decided to go just around the corner...
Nachdem es von hier zunächst nichts weiteres zu berichten gab, beschloss ich, einmal kurz ums Eck zu biegen...
...to extend my safari to Basel´s most central venue, the Barfüsserplatz.
...und die Photosafari in Richtung des zentralen Barfüsserplatz zu erweitern.
Above the Barfüsser is the Leonhard grammar school with a sculptor of the dragon slayer Saint Georg in the front. I always pitied the dragon as he never seems to be a real match for Saint George in this and the other countless representations of this confrontation.
Oberhalb des Barfüsser steht das Leonhard Gymnasium und davor eine Skulptur, die den Kampf des heiligen Georgs mit dem Drachen zeigt. Schon immer habe ich den Drachen um sein Schicksal bedauert, da er weder in dieser, noch in einer der unzähligen anderen Darstellungen dieses Kampfes einen ernstzunehmenden Gegner darstellt.
Sometimes the renowned Toy Museum at the Barfüsser has mounted...

...interactive displays in it´s shop-window. Only then you can see...

...and big sharks meandering through the street canyons.

The tram line 6 brings you in three stops to the Basel Rhine promenades.
Mit der Tramlinie 6 sind es nur drei Stops bis an die Basler Rheinpromenaden.
The Stadt Casino is in fact not a casino, but Basel´s main concert venue.
Das Stadt Casino beherbergt nicht wie der Name vermuten lassen könnte eine Spielhalle, sondern ist das Konzerthaus von Basel.
The Barfüsser church harbours Basel´s History Museum.
Die Barfüsserkirche beherbergt heute das Historische Museum von Basel.
North of the Barfüsser is the The Mitte, my favorite coffeehouse in Basel, operated by the non-profit organization Unternehmen Mitte.
Nördlich des Barfüssers stösst man auf mein Lieblingscafé in Basel, Die Mitte. Betrieben wird das Café vom gemeinnützigen Unternehmen Mitte.
The venue claims that many things can be experienced here, like bigcitysmall, panoramasofa, eyesightcontact, coffeegroundconversations, faceflickering, impulsfireplace, viewchangingforce, thoughtsurfingculture, simultaneouswhispering and happinessroomsensations
An der Aussenmauer montiert die vielen Erfahrungsmöglichkeiten, die das Café verspricht.
The Mitte is located in the counter hall of a former people´s bank. In the center equipped with roughly 30.000 Euro worth of perfect sitting comfort ;-)
Betrieben wird die Mitte in der Schalterhalle einer ehemaligen Basler Volksbank. Im Zentrum steht bester Sitzkomfort im Wert von ungefähr 30.000 Euro zur Verfügung ;-)

- Go to google maps -> using this link <- and browse the map within a maximum distance of 15 km to Basel, Switzerland.
- If you find something that catches your interest, right click on the location and select ´What's here?´from the context menu to obtain the latitude and longitude coordinates.
- Add the coordinates and/or the name of the place to the comments. If you wish you can further specify what exactly you would like me to report from there. I will use my GPS to get there as close as possible.
-Geht über -> diesen link <- auf Google Maps und durchstöbert die Karte in einem Umkreis von 15 km rund um Basel.
-Wenn ihr auf etwas interessantes stosst, könnt Ihr mit einen Rechtsklick über das Kontextmenü bei "Was ist hier?" die Längen- und Breitengrade des Ortes entnehmen.

Thank you for your feedback @runridefly. Basel has some architectural gems indeed but I´m pretty sure that California has a lot to offer that you could never find here. Mild winters for example ;-)

Danke @shaka, das Graffiti ist echt super-cool :-) Ich wusste doch, dass es einen Grund gibt, warum ich dich dort hinschicke ;-) "Revolte heisst Leben" und Leben heisst Revolte. Ich glaube, ich mach mir ein T-Shirt mit dem Slogan.
Sehr schöne Safari: Das Toy-Museum und das Café Mitte sehen auch sehr interessant aus. Ich glaube, ich muss Basel bald mal einen Besuch abstatten.

This is a super cool concept. I love it. It's like a crowd sourced Where in the World is Matt Lauer, or something. Very cool! Have you thought of doing it in reverse, some week provide a small perimeter go take your pictures and have everyone guess where?
