Jeff Buckley's Music - Day 129 - Daily Haiku - Grace for Drowning, Part 2

Jeff Buckley, "Lover, You Should Have Come Over"

This post is continued from my previous post.

As a child, Jeffrey Scott Buckley was raised as Scottie Moorhead, using his middle name and his stepfather's surname. And so it might have remained, had he not briefly met his father, and following his death by drug overdose, the younger Buckley, having found his birth certificate, at age eight decided to reclaim his birth name.

And so Scottie Moorhead became Jeff Buckley.

It has commonly been reported, and endlessly repeated, that Buckley alternately hated and/or remained angry with his father for abandoning his mother shortly before he was born, but he himself put that notion to rest over the course of multiple interviews.

Clearly, however, having been abandoned by his father, largely ignored during the one week they spent together, and then excluded from paying his respects at his funeral, took a toll.

As Jeff's mother, Mary Guibert has related, Jeff announced that he was going to become a guitar god, not a singer, thus renouncing, at least for a time, the natural gift he had been bequeathed when he inherited his father's nearly four-octave vocal range.

After a brief stint at Los Angeles' Musicians Institute, Buckley became a session guitarist, playing steadily for a number of years, but remained uninspired by what he was playing, and unable to find his own sense of musical direction.

Then, in 1991, a concert was planned at St. Ann's Cathedral in honor of his father, and the organizers contacted Buckley to ask if he wanted to be part of it. At first he turned them down, but then relented, deciding to make it his own personal tribute to the father he had never really known.

As such, he instructed them not to give him billing, or to announce that he was playing, as he was not looking to use it as a springboard for his own career, but simply to let him come onstage unannounced and perform.

Although he remained unbilled as requested, his participation was the subject of heated discussion, as many of the musicians involved with the concert had either known and/or played with Tim Buckley, most of whom had had no idea that he even had a son.

And, naturally, much of the discussion focused on whether Tim's son would prove to be anywhere near as talented as his father, or whether they would have to cover for him as he performed, to ensure a good show while preventing him from embarrassing himself too badly.

They needn't have worried. He rocked the place.

This concert was the one and only time that Jeff played any of his father's music publicly.

I claim no rights, but offer these videos, as I offer all the music videos I post, in the hopes of promoting my favorite music artists, so that more people become familiar with their music, and that they grow their fan base in the process, as they so richly deserve.

Jeff Buckley, absolutely, should be far better known than he is today.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table. You can see how much that deterred them both.
