The photo above depicts two of my favorite jokers; Marek on right, and his dad Tedi on the left.
Marek's dad played American Dixieland jazz in the 1940s and 50s in Warsaw, in communist Poland, when doing so had to be completely underground and secret, as it was illegal at the time to play American music. Tedi played trombone and guitar, and I believe clarinet, and sang.
This photo was taken in my kitchen in Largo in May of 2009, and I am guessing from the date that it was likely either taken with my Nikon N70 35mm camera, or perhaps one of my succession of Canon PowerShot digital cameras.
As for Allan Sherman's parody of Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf, which he restyled to hilarious result as "Peter and the Commissar," and which I referenced in my post yesterday, my only copy is a VERY old and scratchy cassette tape that a neighbor of my dad's made for me in the 70s, which I still have.
And, originally recorded in 1964, it is still freaking hilarious.
It also contains one of my favorite lines of all time: "A camel is a horse that was designed by a committee." Typical corporate thinking in a nutshell.
But ask and it is given, and, lo and behold, some fabulous person has put it on YouTube! Woo hoo!!! Life as we know it is getting better, better and better!!! ;-)
And, like so many other pieces, the more you know about music, the funnier it is. But some of the musical adaptations, as played by the Boston Pops Orchestra, while still funny, are actually quite enjoyable in and of themselves.
I particularly liked the bossa nova take, which reflects my influence from my dad's deep love for Brazilian music, including Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bossa nova.
And I flat out LOVE the blues take on Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," which quickly became my preferred way to hear the piece played, even though I still love the original.
And Aida as Dixieland jazz? That's just plain funny. ;-)

The other two pieces on the album are "Variations on How Dry I Am," complete with Arthur Fiedler's aforementioned "guest solo," and "The End of the Symphony,", which is a fitting ending to a very funny album.
