Cinco de Mayo
celebrated in Nashville
is mildly insane

Yes, these little Pedal Taverns are a real thing in Nashville, and what fun traffic is downtown when you have to dodge these, especially at intersections, along with the usual Saturday night crowds. Not to mention that tonight there was a Predators game, which means that there were barricades everywhere, with many of the usual routes closed off to traffic, and the cops directing traffic were, shall we say, less than enthused, much less attentive and/or competent.

Of course, traffic downtown is often one huge snarl after 10 PM anyway, because most of the traffic lights at major and minor intersections stop directing traffic properly, and go to flashing red and yellow lights. This is fine in the smaller outlying towns, but in downtown Nashville??? With its recent explosive population growth??? Really???

And, when you have a lot going on in town, which is pretty much every single weekend, bringing loads of tourists into town who already have no clue where they are going, switching to flashing lights at 22:00 has to contribute to a greater number of accidents overall.

I'd love to know the statistics, but even more, I'd love for those in charge to get their heads out of the sand, or wherever they're keeping them, and reprogram the damned lights to continue directing traffic 24/7/365, as they do in nearly every other major city in the U.S. Nashville ceased to be a whistle stop town over a hundred years ago. Get a clue.

I actually love Nashville, for the most part, but not being much of a fan of bar-hopping myself, I prefer staying in the quieter areas when possible. And somehow Nashville has gotten the reputation as the greatest possible destination for bachelor and bachelorette parties, so they come in droves, and as the evening wears on, a large percentage get progressively drunker and less coherent.

That said, for people watching it is beyond great, and you're pretty much guaranteed to see something hilarious along the way, no matter which way you turn. Which reminds me a lot of Hollywood Boulevard, where tourists would come from all over the world to see all the weirdos, not realizing that well over 90% of the weirdos they were seeing were in fact other tourists. ;-)

And Nashville does have some legitimately great food and music venues to offer, so you're bound to find something to your liking. But, like Ybor City in Tampa, I personally prefer to get out of Dodge before the crazies get into full swing.

Call it self-preservation. ;-)

These photos were taken in September, 2012, on our first date night in Nashville after moving to Tennessee. Nashville has grown HUGELY since then, to a ridiculous degree, so had I taken these photos today, there would have been a LOT more vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.

You can see how much that deterred them both.

We have those 'pedal taverns' in Portland, OR, as well, though we don't call them that. Thanks for sharing—I didn't know this about the lights in Nashville!

I'm not a big drinker myself, so pub crawls and rowdy crowds rather perplex me, I'm afraid...

Yeah, I'm pretty much with you there. I'm all for going out to a nice restaurant, or a concert, but barhopping was never my thing, even when I was of that age. I've never been big on crowds.

The only time I ever hung out at a bar was years ago, when I was in college, and I did my homework in one of a couple of restaurant bars on and near the Santa Monica Pier where I could work and watch the water, and I wasn't drinking alcohol. I got to know the bartenders, and they were cool with me hanging out when there was effectively no one else around, and they watched out for me too, which was nice.

I also never was much for barhopping at the age when it's considered 'normal' to do so. (At least partly because I was going to school and also working, and who has that kind of time?)

That's sweet, that the bartenders were so cool. I'm the type who always has a book with me, and I could read at a bar, but I prefer to do it at home, when I have the option!
