Architectural Photography: The Ghost Tower in Bangkok, ตึกระฟ้าผีสิงห์ในกรุงเทพฯ

This tower is the exact copy of the State Tower at the corner of New Road. All the big condominium projects in Bangkok were affected by the legendary 1997 Asian financial crisis which has been dubbed the 'Tom Yum Kung crisis' which eventually spread around the world. The owner of the State Tower did manage to continue the reconstruction of only the State Tower. The one further down the road by about two hundred meters, which was originally known as ‘Sathorn Unique Tower’, did not recover from the economic collapse and has been in ruin till this day.

Local people call this ‘the Ghost Tower’ and they would keep their distance. But, this abandoned tower has become a weird tourist attraction during the past twenty years. The Ghost Tower has 49 floors and was supposed to become a luxury condo with beautiful view of the Chao Phraya River. The reason for its bad name was that dead bodies kept turning up at this tower, including a Swedish backpacker who was discovered by a Thai photographer on the 43rd floor. The tower was frequented by thieves who stole copper wires and building materials, graffiti artists and drug addicts, including ghost hunters and foreign tourists who wanted to get spectacular views of the river and Bangkok.

The Ghosts Tower has been in the local news several times and after the incident of the Swedish tourist’s death; the owner decided to open the tower for tourists and make some money from entry fees. The only way to get to the top is by climbing the stairs to the 49th floor.

To my surprise, this tower has attracted all types of people, from adventurous tourists to dare devil type who seek a unique challenge. It can be very tricky and dangerous walking on unfinished floor and surveying apartments without walls and railings, with occasional holes on the floor for connecting water and drain pipes, including the holes for the unfinished lifts.

But daring adventurers and tourists are well rewarded with breath-taking views of Bangkok especially during the sunset hours. However, this is quite a risky tourist attraction where safety is not guaranteed.

ตึกระฟ้านี้มีชื่อเดิมว่า ‘สาทรยูนิคเทาเวอร์’ ซึ่งเป็นตึกแฝดกับ ตึกสเต็ดเทาเวอร์ ที่หัวถนนเจริญกรุง สาทรยูนิคเทาเวอร์ อยู่ห่างจาก ตึกสเต็ดเทาเวอร์ไปเพียง 200 เมตรเท่านั้น ในสมัยที่มีปัญหาเศรษฐกิจในปี 2540 ที่คนเรียกว่า ‘วิกฤตต้มยำกุ้ง’ ทุกโครงการก่อสร้างประสบกับปัญหาสภาพคล่อง เพราะธนาคารและทรัสต์หลายแห่งมีหนี้เสียมากมาย การแก้ปัญหาด้วยการปกป้องค่าเงินยิ่งทำให้ขาดทุนย่อยยับ และตลาดหุ้นร่วงจนติดพื้น นั่นเป็นแผนการถล่มความมั่งคั่งทางเศรษฐกิจที่มีการวางแผนมาอย่างดี โดยมีคนไทยใจคดเป็นลูกมือฝรั่งในการล่าอาญานิคมทางเศรษฐกิจ เปรียบ เสมือนการเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยาครั้งที่สอง ที่คนไทยเป็นคนเปิดประตูเมืองให้ศัตรูเข้าตีเมือง

เราเองพึ่งมาเข้าใจที่มาที่ไปของการทำลายและดูดความมั่งคั่งทางเศรษฐกิจของเอเซีย และเบื้องหลังโดยฝรั่งนักวิชาการเองที่เป็นมือวางแผนออกมาแฉความชั่วของตนเอง และแสดงความสำนึกบาปบุญ คุณโทษ หลังจากได้เล่นงานและทำลายล้างฐานเศรษฐกิจไปหลายประเทศแล้ว ทำให้รู้ว่า การล่าอาณานิคมโดยกลุ่มทุนไม่เคยหยุด มีแต่การเปลี่ยนรูปแบบและเครื่องมือเท่านั้น

ตึกระฟ้าผีสิงห์แห่งนี้เปรียบเสมือนบาดแผล และเครื่องเตือนใจตัวเรา เสมือนซากกรุงเก่าที่ถูกเผา ทำให้ไม่ลืมความเหี้ยมโหดของการล่าอาณานิคมทางการเงิน และเศรษฐกิจ ชาวบ้านแถวนี้จะเรียกว่าตึกผีสิงห์ เพราะสภาพที่ถูกปล่อยให้รกร้าง และมีการพบศพคนตายที่นี่ค่อนข้างบ่อย ล่าสุดเห็นจะเป็นศพนักท่องเที่ยวแบกเป้ชาวสวีเดน ตึกนี้ตกเป็นข่าวหลายครั้งแล้ว และกลายเป็นจุดดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างชาติที่ต้องการอะไรที่ตื่นเต้นท้าทายชีวิต ที่ผ่านมามีทั้งหัวขโมยที่เข้าไปขโมยสายไฟฟ้าและอุปกรณ์ก่อสร้าง พวกติดยาเสพติดและคนจรจัด ศิลปินกราฟิติที่ต้องการที่ว่างๆมากๆ นักล่าผีและนักถ่ายภาพที่อยากได้มุมแปลกๆของกรุงเทพ

ในที่สุดเจ้าของตึกตัดสินใจเปิดให้นักท่องเที่ยวเข้ามาผจญภัยและ ทำรายได้จากค่าเข้าชมตึกระฟ้าผีสิงห์ ทางขึ้นไปบนดาดฟ้าที่ชั้น 49 คือการไต่บันไดขึ้นไปเอง การเดินสำรวจตึกนี้ค่อนข้างจะอันตราย เพราะห้องไม่มีกำแพง ไม่มีรั้วตามขอบกำแพง มีหลุมสำหรับต่อท่อน้ำประปาและน้ำทิ้ง และมีช่องที่ว่างไว้สำหรับลิฟท์ ทำให้มีอันตรายและความท้าทายในการเดินไปรอบๆ วิวตอนช่วงพระอาทิตย์ตกกับการผจญภัยในตึกผีสิงห์เป็นสิ่งที่นักท่องเที่ยวจะเก็นไว้ในความทรงจำไปอีกนาน
