Rolex Watches are More than Just Timekeepers

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

Rolex is the brand-name of a Swiss luxury watchmaker. The company was founded in 1909 by an Englishman named Hans Wilsdorf.

Rolex moved its base of operations to Geneva, Switzerland in 1919. At its inception Rolex took Swiss movement technology and placed it inside wristwatches sold under other brandnames.

Up until the advent of this Swiss technology time keeping was unrealiable. Once Rolex realized the demand for their time pieces they began making their own watches with the Rolex name inside the dial.

Rolex has become a status symbol for people with power and wealth. The name is known across the globe and in any language the word Rolex means a very expensive watch. The retail price of its top line timepieces is around 500k

The highest recorded price for a Rolex was $17.7 million this past October. A anonymous buyer paid that sum for a Paul Newman worn Daytona model.

Rolex the brand name is estimated to be worth $8 billion due to its noted influence as a world renowned luxury brand. Every day the company produces 2000 time pieces.

The company pioneered many firsts. Some of thier achievements are:

The first waterproof wristwatch

The first wristwatch with an automatically changing date on the dial

The first wristwatch case waterproof to 100m

The first wristwatch to show two time zones at once

The first wristwatch with an automatically changing day and date on the dial

The first watchmaker to earn chronometer certification for a wristwatch

The highest retail price

Because of Rolex's popularity the blackmarket is said to earn close to $25 million annually in the sale of fakes. O.J Simpson wore a fake Rolex during his murder trial.

Many times it's easy to spot a fake. Most fake watches have sloppy quartz movement. The second hand of a fake will stutter whereas a real Rolex has smooth second hand movement. Real Rolex's also emit a tick that will be audible with a listen.

Next the weight is usually a dead giveaway. Fakes lack the heft of a genuine Rolex, the metals used in an original are quality and will surprise a buyer when held.

Another test is to check the winder on the side of the watch, a counterfeit will look unremarkable with a fake. Genuine watches from Rolex have finely crafted engravings and the grooves will look like a work of art.

Lastly the cyclops window to the date on a real Rolex will magnify the number, this is hard to fake and most times a counterfeit will skip this test.

Upon investigation a buyer should walk away if any of these methods leave them unclear of a genuine article. If possible a legitimate watch seller will be able to quickly tell by taking the watch apart and looking at its mechanics.

Even though most of us use our phones to tell the time nowadays Rolex sales are not suffering. People still choose to buy their time pieces as wearing one is a symbol to yourself and others that you made it. They're also finely tuned mechanical pieces that some people just find pretty cool to own.

*I should note to you all that I don't have one yet, so I guess I have alot more blogging to to do before I reach that level..therefore I'm accepted full power upvotes to get me to my goal 😂

You’d look good in a sea dweller GA
👊😘

He sure would. Maybe a few of them for his big pimpin' moments

Yo fat-e, you of all people should be sporting a Rolex! I love this piece — want one bad...

I have a timex. Is that close enough?

@goldenarms I am not a watch wearing Guy but I do have to admit this is a terrific post on the understanding of the history of Rolex. If I ever do buy a watch in the Future this is the Brand I would Buy.

Thanks man, I have a couple watches, a Gshock I wear everyday and an old Esquire dresswatch for special occasions. I'd love to have a Rolex but that's not really gonna happen, I'd buy silver or gold first 😊

I went Rolex shopping this summer and honestly, you would be surprised how affordable they start out and even going up the ladder, very nice and somewhat affordable.

Even more affordable? A refurbished one.

Go ahead!! You know you want to! ;)

Like what are we taking lower end? $700?

Probably closer to 8-10K
However, I have watched them go at auction for much less
They have auctions on them every day

Somewhat affordable may have been the wrong term
But after looking for years at the inflated price tag
That seemed like a deal

Haha I think we're in different tax brackets dswigle? 😨 Xmas is coming tho, u want my address? 😝

It is all relative, right?

I believe even I would have to sit on Santa's lap and whisper in his ear for that one. ;) I can always pass along your address too!

As you say, a Rolex is very much a status symbol these days. Apparently they were developing a smartwach as well. Not sure if it got off the ground. Maybe they realised their market is old fogies and CEOs who don't know how to work computers anyways😂

I'm not an old fogie but you can bet your ass if I hit the lottery I'd have one. Apparently all former presidents have had one aswell. It's like having a gold Apple watch or iPhone, you don't need it but it'd be nice to have. I just love anything gold! Thx for stopping by @bmj

If you got one I would have no choice but to call you an old fogie lol!! Honestly, I might consider one if I had an 8-figure bank account.

They could be classified as an investment aswell. Older variety's sell for far over the initial retail. They could also get you killed on the wrong side of town lol Gotta weigh the risks

Very much a niche investment. I probably wouldn't wear it out in public too often... you never know when you may be on the wrong side of the street..

Nice Post... Rolex stands strong against its competitors...

Yeah they're timeless timepieces lol Thanks for checking out my post 😎

Thought you might like this one GA...

I was in the Yorkdale mall in the GTA last week. Went to the rolex, Breitling, and some other fancy watch store. I didn't buy any, sadly they are out of my price range until steem picks up steem, but they are pretty sweet! Breitling has one with a whole bunch of time zones you can switch between with the dial.
