Running goals

in #teamsouthafrica6 years ago

Winter is never a good time for exercise, especially when the outdoors is involved. I know that South Africa is not as cold as many of the other parts of the world, but temperature is all relative. If you are used to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer, then I would consider 5 degrees to be very cold.

In order to maintain some level of fitness during winter (cause we all know that summer bodies are made in winter), I decided to enter a race. I am not a very good runner, but I like to think I am fair and have done several races in the past. Just this year I have run 2 half marathons, and a 2-day trail run which I wrote about here.

I have entered a 10km race as I would really like to try and improve on my best 10km time. The Old Eds Road Race is in Johannesburg on the 12 August and my goal is to run it under 1 hour. I know that might not seem like much of a goal to you seasoned runners out there but please consider how hard it is to train during the winter months. I did manage a sub-1 hour 10km earlier this year as part of a half marathon but I was much fitter then.

Just last night I went for a run at 7pm and it was a chilly 5 degrees Celsius. I am going to try and keep track of my training and progress here on Steemit. You know...to help keep myself accountable it is best to put these things down in writing…especially on a blockchain!

I am going to be on holiday for a week so I just hope that I can keep it up! Will keep you all updated.

Let me know how all of you stay in shape during the cold winter months (even though some of you are experiencing glorious summer right now).

Some pics from my run last night

Cool man. Looks like I could add my running stats on to my Journal as well.

Not nearly as advanced as you though. Lol

If you link your device to strava app you will get all that extra stats.

I try do water aerobics three to four times a week. My quack has cleared me to play a bit of squash again... I did a bit of treadmill running for the first time in about 4 years, just two kms but I felt I nearly killed myself. Exercise is great though

I have heard the water aerobics is a great workout. I played league squash for about 5 years but just did not have the time to keep it up. Great form of social exercise too!

Good man! I've been out of excercise for a while now... Anyway, when I do get into my routine I tend to do more VO2 max kinda workouts so shorter, faster runs, light weight but high volume weights, bag work and that kinda stuff :)

Still sounds quite diligent. I normally average about 80% max HR on my runs which is quite high. Think that will come down when i get fitter.
