These are my entries for today´s #streetphotography contest
hosted by @juliank.
More Cuba photos from my November’16 trip (which happened to be during US Presidential Election and just a couple weeks before Fidel Castro’s death). Between the cigars, cars, art, rum, music, dancing, rum, food, baseball, exploring and rum… we finally made it to the beach on the northern shore of Cuba just east of Havana, where these photos were taken.
When you visit Cuba, one of the slogans you see often is “Cuba Si”, which is a shortened version of “Cuba Si, Yanqui No!” referring to no Yankees (no Americans). This appears to have originated from crowds responding to Castro’s speech in September 1960 relating to his First Declaration to Havana

The beach we visited was Santa Maria del Mar

That is interesting. We saw these signs (Cuba Si) too but we did not know the story behind it. Thanks for explanation @armentor! And beautiful shot from the beach, it looks like a true Caribbean catalogue image :) We did not make it to the coast when we were in Cuba...
PS: thanks for the nice mention too! :) Very appreciated.
Thanks man!. Yes, we saw it in many places, more like graffiti and also in street art. We thought it was just patriotic tags. A week ago when going through the photos with friends, I just googled it and to our surprise it was an anti-American slogan (rightfully). It was also in response in that same speech to get assistance from the USSR. The beach was very similar to the Caribbean, but I heard that the south facing are more like Cancun, etc.
Very interesting insight into the history of Cuba, thank you. Like I said, I had no idea...
Btw the beach you posted here also looks very similar to those in Mexico ;) It is almost identical to this one for example:
It is the Cozumel Island, about 30 miles from Cancun.
Yes, quite beautiful. I'v been to Tulum but not Cozumel... Next trip!

Cuba has a lot of pristine beaches @armentor because it does not trade with US so the oceans around are not polluted.
Great point. Yes, very little shipping and industry because of the embargo.
Yes, but the people gets organic produce free from pesticides. So in a way it just preserved Cuba. @armentor
