Story: Matthew And The Dragons (Part XVIII)
Part XVIII
Inside the castle's war room, the king is having a conversation with Matthew.
"How many more "hives" can you make before the black dragon attack?" The king asked eagerly.
"Currently, there are still four unfinished "hives" in the workshop," answered Matthew."We should be able to complete it before the black dragon attack himself."
The king nods at this, and asked again. "I heard you're still in the process of completing several new machines. What are there capabilities?"
"I've designed a new type of ballista, capability wise, it's three times the power and range of the old model. Then there's a new type of military carriage, which is larger but faster than the old ones," explained Matthew. "Oh, there are also smaller weapons and tools like a stronger version of the crossbow."
The king was amazed by Matthew's efficiency. He was able to do so much in such a short time.
"How are you able to do so much with so little time?" The king asked.
Matthew quickly explained that he had the designs for years but the lack of fundings made it impossible for him to make those designs a reality. With his meager salary as a blacksmith apprentice and assisstant, he was only able to make smaller tools like thw ones he uses in the ambush at the forest of Gloom.
Sighing, the king lament at the fact that there's such talent in the kingdom. If he had known before hand, he would have recruited the young man long ago. He then decided in his heart that once this ordeal is over, he would enact several changes in the kingdom, including making a school for commoners. The kingdom is in desperate of these talents.
A few hours later, Matthew left the castle escorted by Aria and Boris, along with some knights dressed in civilian clothings. Everyone in the military niw understood the importance of this young man. Therefore, the military spare no efforts for his protection.
Meanwhile in a stronghold somewhere, a man took a secret message from a hawk. The hawk is a bird specifically trained to deliver important message.
After, releasing the hawk, the man read the mesage and frown. Reading some more, his expression, turned dark and serious. The letter described the result of the wyverns attack. It tells of the defeat the wyverns when faced with a new type of weapons called the "hive". This alarmed the man but what truly left dumbstruck is the name of its inventor—a commoner in the name of Matthew!
Bam!
The man hits the table in anger. Then several man soldiers enters the room when they heard the noise. Angered, the man yells at the soldier to leave. Calming down, the man stares at the letter once more. He knows of this name. The person that first meet the silver dragon and reported it to the king. He is also the one who searched the forest of Gloom for the silver-wingend dahlias.
How could he not know? This man is the one who ordered a baron to ambush the ones the king assigned to search! He even pays an assassin from the "Dark Hands" to eliminate them! Yet all of his efforts came to naught as not only did they failed, the ambushers are even countered ambushed and killed! Worst yet the useless son of that baron was captured, giving the king the evidence he needed! Thus, he was forced to launch the rebellion at an earlier time.
Yes, this man is the person responsible for the rebellion, and is there leader. He is Bernard, the duke of Clayd and a cousin of the king! Duke Bernard desired the throne for a long time but since his not from the direct line of the royal family he have no right to contest for the throne. Yet this does not stop his ambition, after inheriting the title of duke from his father, he'd been moving in the shadows. Bribing and convincing other nobles to switch sides.
He had prepared so much and is just waiting for the right opportunity. That opportunity came when the black dragon decided to attack the kingdom. Hence, he secretly went to see the black dragon and made an agreement with it! He would destabalized the kingdom's capability to depend itself. In exchange, the black dragon would make him king!. The black dragon cared not who is king as long as he became the overlord of the land, and the duke is on the same page. Everything is fine with him as long as he became king!
After thinking for a long while, the duke started writing. He then shouted towards the door.
"Anyone there? Attend to me!" Duke Bernard ordered.
A middle-aged noble enters the room and bow. The duke then gave the finished letter and gave it to the noble. After the noble left, a strange smile appeares on the duke's face.
