Journey to the end of the world - Chapter 4, by @vincentleroy (translated from French)

in #story6 years ago (edited)

This is an authorized translation in English of a post in French by Vincent Le Roy (@vincentleroy): Le voyage au bout du monde • chapitre 4

As my primary language is not English, there are probably some mistakes in my translation.

Remember that the person who speaks here is NOT me, Vincent Celier (@vcelier), but Vincent Le Roy (@vincentleroy), a French guy.

Journey to the end of the world

Chapter 4

The port is definitely dry and the land that is the island is facing us. Furrowing amid stranded boats and free buoys, we follow Nathalie's advice. Marine was inspired to put on her boots. I was more reckless. My little canvas shoes are already two bathtubs at my feet.

Arriving on the islet after a good half hour of walking, we look at this small strip of land, with its pebbles which delimit small parcels. Everything is abandoned. Nathalie will explain later that at the beginning of the century, the island counted more than 120 families and each one cultivated potato on its small plots. The only arable land of the island. Today, there are only the old ones who take advantage of the big coefficients to try their lobster luck in the rocks discovered.

There is this impressive dike too. A wave breaker. We quickly saw everything and my stomach reminds me of my gastronomic project. I try to convince Marine to jump on the crustacean that is the reputation of the island. She refuse categorically. Nathalie recommends a fish caught in the morning. Deal. Time seems to have stopped.

My lobster is a absolutely delicious. The conversation too. Geopolitics necessarily. It seems to me that this is the first time that my daughter does not speak to me in a condescending tone. We share our analyzes and our points of view. This trip to the end of the world is like a new beginning with my daughter. However, she impresses me with knowledge and analysis. I did not think you could be so sharp at 17 ...

Two hours since my head is getting the color of my lobster, it's time to visit the rest of the island. The return boat is at 16:30. So we still have two good hours to cross the village and go to the end to see the lighthouse...
