“Papa, I forgive you, but there’s no more point in living.”

Claire sobbed as she read her daughter’s note for the twentieth time, still unconvinced that her sweet little Jenny had decided to end her own life. The police handed her the note when they were about to leave the scene, apologizing like it was their fault, consoling her like I mattered.

Nothing else matters to her anymore.

She folded the note carefully and slipped it in her pocket, not wanting her husband to see it. He’s still out with his friends, buying her some time to think, maybe figure things out. She would have to prepare for her daughter’s funeral. She’s got to start moving. But first, her husband needs to know.

Her poor husband needs to know. 

She wondered if he already knows.

She went to the kitchen without any plans on mind, but decided she has to cook. It will be easier to break the news over dinner or something. Just like when she told him she was pregnant 15 years ago. She remember how happy they were, how proud the man had been, how he loved his little Jenny...

The news will surely break his heart. It should.

Carlos came home a little drunk as usual. The table is already set, his wife is smiling at him. He smirked in response and sat down to join her. Pasta, chicken, peas, and a lot more – he’s about to eat like a king. He started to dig in.

"Eat", Claire thought, smiling to herself.

Carlos looked up from his plate to his wife to see that her plate remained untouched. He didn’t care, she didn’t mind. He continued to embrace his fate with indulgence.

Anytime now…

A glass shattered on the floor, its contents spreading like a pool of blood. She watched her husband, proud of herself, as the poison starts to kick in. Carlos turned to face her.

Confusion. Betrayal. Fear. Vengeance.

His pallid face still looked smug, not showing any hint of repentance despite his struggle. His repentance won’t change a thing, anyway. He gasps in desperation, his hands on his throat, eyes bulging out. The chemicals are doing their job as promised.

Claire saw it all. She saw how her husband reached out to her like he wanted to rip the smile out of her face. She saw how hard he fought, how the plates ended up lying helpless on the floor, and how his hands bled in the process – his futile attempt of survival.

She saw how his life slipped away from his eyes, his mouth still full of treachery and deceit, his soul unforgiven.

Jenny was right, there’s no more point in living. But the way he suffered is a lame comparison to what her daughter had been through.

He didn’t need to know, after all.
