A Mildewy Incident In The Green House Days After The First Days of Snow

in #story7 years ago (edited)

The moment the snow melted we went to check the front and the backyard and of course the frog. I haven't seen him but since it doesn't smell like anything died in the strawberry house, I'm thinking he must have just burrowed himself in the pot. That ice came from the top of the pop up greenhouse we were letting dry in the backyard.

Here's a short video I made while drawing a face on it on Paint.

These days, the strawberries aren't doing well in a sense that perhaps cause during the snowy days, the greenhouse must have been misty inside since I had to close the whole door and the only ventilation there is that small window. The flowers and the fruits of the strawberry had mildew so I had to cut and get rid of them. I forgot to take pics of them petals and fruit tips that grew gray hair like mildew on them before ridding them though.

I don't mind it about the strawberry but what saddened me the most is the pot of chamomile plant I've managed to finally grow this year. They, too got it so am worried that nothing may sprout back next year. Fingers crossed they do. The seeds were a gift to my husband, they're not just organic for some reasons the label says "real chamomile." Made me wonder whether there actually is a fake chamomile?

It's my first year to ever grow one and I was pretty excited when they finally sprouted. Oh these pics were taken back in summer, some time in June. I actually thought the plant would die till they gave me their first bud.

If you yourself have a chamomile plant then you know how teeny tiny those buds actually are. At that time, I wonder what they would actually look like when in bloom cause back when I was still in the Philippines, the only chamomile I used to get were dried flowers of it or the teaed version. One of the parents of my students used to bring me these to boost my immune system every Dec back then and when I came here, I had to often take chamomile tea to do the same thing specially that it actually snowed during my very first year here.

I never thought that the flowers are really petite (that's my pinkie) and delicate. Somehow, I was wondering whether I could gather as much to dry and make tea later. Some time in August, these were my first flower harvest.

Am not sure whether it was wise soaking them in water before hanging them upside down to dry but you see, they have tiny insect in them that so I let them crawl out because in my experience drying the lavender flowers, the insect doesn't really leave the flower even when you let them crawl out of them, not all of them so even though I already shook the flower off and let them crawl out of it on the table, I also soaked them to make sure everything's gone.

Before the snow fell, I moved it in the strawberry green house because it still has flowers in it but I guess it was a mistake doing that cause they, too catch mildew. I had to cut the top with the mildew on it and throw them away. Though I believe that some flowers managed to seed, I didn't really get to collect them anymore so I just let it drop in the same pot hoping they'd just return next year. I'm not so sure of that so I wonder. Normally, this is the time to ask K but she's out of the picture so I guess, I thought I'd ask instead.

I guess, I will have to unzip the door let the whole greenhouse air out as soon as its sunny again to make sure the mildew doesn't spread on my other plants in there. It's pretty crowded in there now so contagion may spread faster. Of course, I already removed the pot and moved it outside where it's pretty sunny.

I posted about this to ask whether you happen to know whether those chamomile seed would just sprout next year or do you think it would have been wiser that I had them harvested and sown next year?
15% up to anyone who can tell me in the comment with source. Another 15% up to anyone who could suggest a solution to reduce dampness in the greenhouse
so the mildew incident doesn't repeat itself in there again, prefer it ORGANIC though.

Well the cam you are using have a great focus i really love it ?

What a lovely post @englishtchrivy....you are always full of surprises...the ice queen is such a good idea mon ami.

I was glad to discover your husband did not have to hold the piece of ice whilst you were drawing.... ^__^

Yes...she looks like a woman....no worries.

Lovely photographs and topic....I am afraid I have nothing I can add to the dialogue where green houses are concerned or as it relates to Chamomile...except that it self sows.

All the best to you mon ami. A bientot.

thanks for confirming they are self sowing that's a relief!

can you imagine he was holding that for a few seconds so I could get the right shot? You should have seen his face while I burst laughing at him hahaha so cute at that time hahah

"...the label says "real chamomile." Made me wonder whether there actually is a fake chamomile?"

There is one, not a "fake", but more of a "faker", and the difference to the "real" thing is, it doesn't smell and doesn't have healing powers. It's called "Matricaria Inodora" and looks like this:

Matricaria_maritima-subps-inodora_vallee-de-grace-amiens_80_22062007_2.jpg

Real chamomile is called "Matricaria Chamomilla". They are related, both are Asteraceae.

Mildew is a very common problem. Funny enough, there is a "real" (powdery mildew) and a "fake" mildew (downy mildew), both of them attack the chamomile plant.

I might be a booksmart fellow who can tell you useless information about stuff, but a recipe against mildew I don't have. Sorry about that. I DO KNOW that ladybugs eat the stuff, so perhaps filling your greenhouse with them might help. This "tip" given without any guarantees! Who knows what else in your greenhouse they might develop an appetite for? :-)

At least, now you know what to google for:
https://www.google.de/search?q=killing+powdery+mildew+organically
https://www.google.de/search?q=killing+downy+mildew+organically

thanks for reading!

ah .. that explains the label
they almost look the same don't they?
I think I've seen a lot of those fakers on the road?

as for having ladybugs, they don't seem to sell them here :(
probably against animal rights? but prefer it that way cause I also believe that we should let nature take its own course and by nature, lady bugs should be hiding elsewhere nowadays

as for googling solutions, I decided to ask cause sometimes it's better to get tips from someone who's already experienced it and proven their solution works but thanks for the links anyway!

I can not advise you about the plants, do not have a bearing.
But I love your kreavality, take a picture of ice and make a beautiful woman's face as you show in the video. I call it true art. Wondering what the next will be like you create that way @englishtchrivy

thank you !

Sowing can be done in autumn or spring. If you do it in autumn they can develop better roots and will make a stronger plant in the following year.
Happy growing and have a nice day!

I'd probably do that next year God wills :D

clueless about gardening. can't help i'm afraid
you're so lucky having space for a greenhouse.
not very keen on chamomile, cause it acts as diuretic for me :D
i brew sage. it's bitter, but it's good for you
sometimes chamomile too, when my tummy's upset

hey, you've replaced your profile pic goblin :D
thanks for reading
it's alright .. hopefully someone gives me an advice on it
I've never tried sage and yes, I automatically take chamomile when my tummy acts up, too
sends me to lay egg though hahahah

yes, i change my profile pic often;
next week i'll be Yoda:D

:D
okay Jedi see you next week :)
I mean your new profile pic

That work on ice is brilliant! You are so creative. Well done!

I admire your power of concentration that you have, to have seen only the shape of the ice and to form a beautiful work with it is extraordinary, thank you very much for sharing the video of the realization of the work.
the daisies will grow again, here in my country in the winter they will completely die and at the beginning of spring comes the first shoots with it,
congratulations dear friend @ englishtchrivy for the talent you have

pssst... they're not daisies
let me guess you just went through the pictures huh
