Can Adult Stem Cells Be Used To Help Us Stay Stronger As We Age?

Steemians. Thanks for being here. Pls do RESTEEM this post after reading it to help create awareness around this important scientific breakthrough.

My direct answer to the above titled question is Yes. How this is possible is the basis for this article. Imagine a world where human life can be considerably extended to any number of years; a world where for instance one accidentally sustains serious damage to optical nerve and becomes blind. The person is taken to a hospital and the nerve damage is reversed and the victim's sight restored, using adult stem cell approach. Imagine such a world. Indeed, this will certainly mark the beginning of human advancement towards the world of immortality. Let's take a more closer look at what stem cell is like about.

What is Stem Cell?

According to the National Institute of health:

Stem cells have the extraordinary potential to develop into many different clinics types in the body. They serve as a sort of repair system for the body, and can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person is still active. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a penile cell, a muscle cell or a brain cell. source

The above description is only an explanation of what a typical stem cell is all about. There are different types of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells are good examples. In this article, we are focusing on adult stem cells and their applications in regenerative medicine.

The Source of Adult Stem Cells

Bone marrow is the primary source of adult stem cells. Just like in the beginning of life, adult stem cells has inherent ability to change into any type of cell in the body during life time. Adult stem cells are released from the bone marrow into the blood stream. As they are being circulated around the body, they seek out problem areas, renew and repair those tissues needing help.

Why We Get Old And Roles of Adult Stem Cells In Anti-aging Phenomenon

The essential role adult stem cells play in both health and disease is one of the greatest discoveries of contemporary medical science. As we advance in age, the ability of our bone marrow to produce and release stem cells, declines. This, along with exposure to various environmental (including dietary) toxins, decline in hormonal secretions, oxidation, stress and inflammation, are responsible for aging.

The decline of adult stem cells in the blood stream can result in un-repaired damage in virtually any body part, leading to tissue breakdown, aging and loss of health eventually.

Scientific anti-aging study has shown that adult stem cells release from the bone marrow drops exponentially as we age, in accordance with the following percentages:

  • At age of 35 years — the stem cell release rate drops by 45%

  • At 50 years — it drops by 50%

  • At 65 years — 90% (leaving only 10% of adult stem cells in the blood stream at this critical time they are most needed to fight off diseases, sicknesses, etc)

Adult Stem Cells In Children And Adult

A child has about stem cell circulation of 100% in their blood stream. The release of the adult stem cells in the blood stream of a child is functioning at optimal levels. This explains why when a child fractures a leg or has injuries and illnesses, he heals and regain health quite rapidly.

As we advance in age, everything slows down. It takes more time to get rid of coughs and colds; more time for injuries like cuts and scrapes, to heal. Eventually, it becomes a lot of work to even get out of bed in the morning. Inefficiency in the release of adult stem cells from the bone marrow is part of the reasons for this.

Adult Stem Cells As The Key For Staying Strong In Old Age.

In a study published in elife, researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Centre (URMC) have demonstrated that the loss of muscle stem cells is the core reason behind muscle decline in old age in mice. The result of their finding challenges the current belief that age-related muscle decline is primarily caused by loss of motor neurons.

'I think we have shown a formal demonstration that even for aging sedentary individuals, your stem cells are doing something. They do play a role in normal maintenance of your muscle throughout life,' said study author Joe Chakkalakal, Ph.D., assistant professor of Orthopedics in the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research at URMC. source

Study authors are working to develop a drug or therapy that can slow muscle stem cell loss and muscle decline in the future.

Conclusion

It can be seen that we have been able to decipher what makes stem cells so special in regenerative therapy in this article. When a stem cell divides, it either remain a stem cell or becomes another type of cell such as a nerve cell, brain cell, etc. This therefore follows that stem cells can be directed to treat specific cell types and tissues and be used to treat diseases such as stroke, spinal cord injury, heart disease, etc.

Thanks @jodipamungkas and @gbenga for the badge.

Sort:

I myself have used stem cells for anti-aging (I posted about it last year) by having my adipose fat harvested. Today, if I were to do it again, the umbilical cord stem cells would be my choice . In the Ukraine, they use embryonic cells which in my opinion is the best. I have also had great success with the lesser healer Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), which I have just posted. I love that you have posted this (and well done :) as this type of healing is fantastic and people need to know they have an alternative other than surgery or worse.

Wow, that's good to know. From my consultations, I believe you are very right in your assertion that embryonic stem cell is best.

@eurogee

Watch/listen to Rogans last podcast with Mel Gibson and his doctor......he has a good argument for the umbilical cell/"juice" being the most effective.

Bravo, this is informative to the teeth... Wouldn't have gotten such an important info, if not for you. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Excellent article. Will definitely increase life expectancy

Yes. You're very right

I never even heard of this before, Never liked biology.
Thanks for the info

Thanks. So you can now look young forever. Provided you have the means. Lols

Fellow Microbiologist, you did a very good Job by putting this up.... This is Educative and Informative....

STEEM ON HARDER BRO

So you're a microbiologist? And you don't wanna help people with what you know. Or u gonna begin writing on that soon?

I will definitely give a shot at it..... I take this as a challenge

Nice one boss. I wanted to ask, is there anything humans can do to reduce the deterioration of the stem cell from reducing so rapidly as we aged?

Yes, by taking a specially formulated stem cell nutrition. Again, one can be subjected to stem cell injection, too.

A wonderful breakthrough capable of turning the health sector around. Thanks a bunch.

Welcome bro

You know what, bro.
Maybe I would just have to be a better scientist and if this is ever possible...
I know it is possible! I just wanted to blab a bit further.
Well-done boss
