In a Data World; How Zebras could save Rhinos from Extinction through IBM's IoT Technology

Humans are data, we carry around zillions of data in our bodies through Sight, Sound, Smells, Feelings and Memories. Same with wild animals, nature has embedded abundant of information in Birds, Reptiles, some insects, Rodents and other wild animals. This data could be used to check and balance our natural habitat and save some animals on the verge of destruction. One of such animal is the Rhinoceros.

The Rhino's horn is the threat to it's life, poachers kills it for it's Keratin rich horn which has same biological components as the human fingernail. This horns sells on the blackmarket same price as Gold price, in Eastern Asia where the largest Market for Rhino horns is located; Vietnam is the capitol of Rhinoceros Horns Markets, this is where horns of slain animals killed all over the World is shipped to and sold at high prices for its supposedly medicinal and therapeutic properties.

Enders Game of Poachers

Rhinos mainly are natives of Southern Asia and Africa, sadly their population in Africa and the World is decreasing rapidly. In one year alone, over 1000 of this Animals were killed in South Africa and on an average day all over Africa reserves, three of this fierce giants are killed which brings a total tally of over 7000 killed in the past decade.

Poachers kills this animals with sophisticated modern day weapons just for the horns.

The numbers of poachers is growing rapidly every single day and what that means is that there are more of this killers out there with more advanced weapons- Bradley Schroder, CEO at the Welgevonden Game Reserve South Africa.

IBM's IoT to the Rescue

Using Animals of prey as early warning systems, Zebras, Elands, Impalas, Wildebeest might help save Rhinos extinction through innovations to fit a camouflaged leather collar that would send details of their motions to park rangers that would trigger a rapid response once distress is captured in these animals. A system that provides for a proactive approach rather than the traditional reactive response.

We detect specific behaviors in Zebras and Wildebeest when they sense threats, be it predators, Vehicles or people on foot with Rifles. If this patterns is recognized in data, an event will be send to the Wildlife reserve's command and control centers so that the response unit can be quickly dispatched- Petrus Hendrik Greyvenstein, IBM Executive IT Architect

A proactive approach that is the brainchild from the research department of Wageningen University.
A Netherlands based educational citadel that features sciences group which focused on research and education relating to the health and welfare of both humans and animals.

The solution has been deployed over the last year and is currently being tested in the 38,200-hectare Welgevonden Game Reserve in South Africa. More than 100 animals have been fitted with the collars, which transmit information such as the animal’s location, ambient temperature and their movements. Various experiments are currently underway, whereby data is collected about the animal’s behavior towards different threats in its habitat. A number of specific patterns have been discovered, including those of migration and feeding habits.-IBM

IBM has mapped out different phases for this project with the first phase being collection of enough data to determine how this collared animals react when in distress i.e when predators or poachers approaches. The biggest achievement would be to start reduction in numbers of Rhinos being slaughtered and bringing this killers to due justice.

I think there is a geospatial approach aimed towards achieving a sustainable wild life in the ecosystem.
Extinction of specie is troubling the animal kingdom and endangering the lives of both flora and fauna.
Remote Sensing techniques with applications in wild life specie management could be a good approach

Remote Sensing sure sounds like a viable approach to ending this Poaching menace.

That is truly a wonderful innovation. Let's hope it can help save more rhino's. It will be interesting to see what and how often they perceive something as a threat as well.

Yes, the part where the Actual Predators and poachers gets identified is what gives me concerns...

Well let's hope there are different patterns in their state of becoming allerted. I'm sure there might well be. Also, as a rhino, I don't believe they will become anxious as often as prey animals. Idk, I could be wrong. I guess only time will tell

There are already many endangered species and we can't have these to join the list. The authorities should please perfect whatever strategy to preserve these animals.

Thanks @oluwoleolaide

@largerben

Nice, interesting and educative, keep it up

This is so cool. Nice to see animal preservation is possibly by innate animal signals.

Wow, IoT is great! 258% upvoted Thanks!

you seem to be passionate about animals dear

Yes i am, a wild spirit...

lol. i'd love to be wild too
