On steem and globalisation

View this post on Hive: On steem and globalisation

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

I've always said one of the strongest attributes for STEEM is to reach the disenfranchised, to reach out to those countries that are constantly manipulated by the u.s. dollar fiat system, to empower those without access to banks and credit, to revolutionize the monetary grapevine to be inclusive via decentralized means !!

peace

I agree - it is s great strength of steem!

NB - does anyone know whether it's possible to erase stuff on the blockchain, surely it must be.... 'immutable' can't actually mean 'immutable', surely a future HF could erase certain material if necessary?

Pretty sure that it's a no, but the front ends can choose to hide stuff from the standard user (they do that on Steemit.com daily).

I mean at the moment, it seems to me that steem is mainly run by a handful of individual witnesses, and I guess that's possible when we've only got 60K active users, or thereabouts, but if we scale up to 600K or 6 million, let alone 600 million, surely that's not going to be manageable by handful of talented individuals like it is at the moment?

Only the top 20 get enough pay to cover a full-blown set-up, but only this number (and a few spares) are required to hold the blockchain together, I think.

Interesting stuff as always - Switch the spellchecker on next free-write :P

I've just gone back and changed the typos!

It's a result of getting used to my new Mac after 20 yrs of Windows.

Just cldn't be arsed.. then read it with some degree of horror.

Surely it takes more work to maintain servers catering to 600 million people?!?

You would think so, but I think it's just a case of pumping up the hardware specs. Anyway, we'll cross that bridge pretty bloody happily if we get to it!

Digital Capitalism - Dan Schiller is an interesting book. It's a bit old now, but still some useful stuff, especially about the effect of digital networks and global information flows.

I did not know steemnode.com! It looks fantastic!

I had a frustating time searching for steem data yesterday - that's something I'm going to look into more.

Digging around I found there are only 8 witnesses (or around there) who run 'full nodes'.

Interesting analogy made there @revisesocoilogy. It’s fascinating to see that we’ve come to an era where a social network (could) threaten the power and authority of Governments.
