Introduction

Hello all! Welcome to the Day 14 update along our 100 day poetry journey. Actually, Day 14 is about halfway through as I write this. It began at 6 PM GMT on March 20. Normally I like to post these early on before the day starts and our poetry class begins, but today I needed to select the Week 1 winners and take care of some other unfinished business before posting.

Changes to challenge operation & reminders

No major changes to the operation, but remember, you can always reach out to me if you have any questions or comments regarding the challenge. I do plan to reassess a few participants and move them up or down in category in the next few days, so be on the lookout for that!

We will be adding a weekly in-depth poetry feedback session, tentatively on Thursdays where we go over a few pieces in detail and make recommendations on how it might be improved. This will take the place of class on Thursday. If you want to get some unique insight into your writing and accelerate your artistic growth, I'd highly recommend you to submit your pieces for review during those sessions. More info will be forthcoming.

Also, I've started using our dedicated poetry account (@steemitpoetry) to resteem the daily winners starting with the second week (Day 8 onward.) [As you can see, I accidentally resteemed the winners for Day 9 on my main account, a feature I don't use often because Steemit, Inc. has deemed it unimportant to add a feature to easily separate an author's posts from their reblogs.] If you have any suggestions about what more we can use this account for, let me know! It would be cool to feature collaborations of poets from the Steem Schools discord, and I still intend to post the audio for classes, if I can actually get the files to record properly. (Haven't been able to actually retrieve files because of some server issues.) Other than that, it's open-ended at this point what we use this account for.

Class recap

Today's class was focused on imagery, and to an extent, symbolism. We looked at a couple of supermarket poems, one by Ginsberg entitled "A Supermarket in California" and another by Alison Croggon called "The Elwood Organic Fruit and Vegetable Shop." This was an interesting exploration of two very different portrayals of grocery store scenes. Both were rife with images to examine, so check those out if you weren't in class. We also spoke a bit about allusions (mythological ones especially) and how they can either add or detract from a piece.

Gratitude

A humble thank you to all doing the good work of writing, sharing, listening, reading, and speaking in our various forums. You are much appreciated and integral to the success of this initiative! We are 1/7 of the way through the challenge, keep at it!

If you're finding this challenge late and want to get involved, please come to our classes at 6PM-8PM in the Steem Schools discord. We're not taking new entrants for this challenge but still want to keep growing the community of poets and poetry appreciators! All are welcome. https://discord.gg/yZvYjfM

Wonderful! A hearftfelt Thanks to all that are putting their efforts into this.

A hearty congratulations to all that placed -- together we are create community. <3

I feel thankful to @d-pend and all donors and voluntary curators that make this challenging, yet fulfilling contest possible.

I feel very humble and honored because my poem was selected as Week Winner Intermediate Level.

Above all it has taught me discipline.

Congratulations to the rest of winners.

To all participants the best of lucks and discipline.

Keep on writing!

Do you wonder about the power of Steem? Not just it's monetary value, but as a tool to make change happen? I often think about that and the more I work on steemit, the more I see huge potential. I noticed you have a philanthropic side to you and you are supporting @dobartim . I think what he is doing is very innovative and shows there are lots of good people out there.

May I ask how you keep up with your accounting? I am having do distinguish between personal and fund raising. I wish I was more of a poet and I would give your contest a crack.

I have recently started a very simple project on steemit. It is called 'Upvote a tree', where I donate 100% of SBD to the cause of reforestation here in Northern Peru. I actually plant the native tree saplings myself and I post videos about it on here. I have worked in the field of international development for over 10 years and I have yet to see anything close to what steem can do for the world. The principle of just a simple upvote, no mater the value, means it is participatory and driven by a growing community. I could go on and on about my thoughts and visions, but I know you probably get loads of messages and thank you for reading this far.

Kind regards,

@intrepidsurfer

Oh, I was excited I forgot to comment and thank you! :D
Or maybe I was writing poetry and attending class so I forgot to comment...
hmm hmm
Haha JK Anyway thanks ;)

congratulations to the winners .. and it is good to see that there are people who have donated their SBDs for this challenge of the 100 days of poetry .. still the path is long but not impossible ..

I thought I had a heart attack.

Thank you, @d-pend, steemitschool and everyone of you who support me as a beginner, a non native in English language.

This is really big think for me, and encouraging me to be more active.

Thank you.

Congratulation to all winners! Though I am not following this contest but I am following it, this is a very good contest as well as to learn more about poetry. Good luck for you and for all who join this contest.

Have loved reading these works and would encourage any and all who can make it to try to attend some of the classes - a community is being built in real time! <3
